“ Take tw o l" "Fade to blackl"
"Fade audtol" "W e got it. Have
them break down " These are |ust
some of the commands one hears
in the tension filled control room as
Jefferson television students pre
pare the final tape of their first edi
tion of "29 Minutes”
With Greg Matthews, television
instructor, leaning over his shoulder
to help with the critical signals to
the crew in the Jefferson television
studio, Scott Johnson, a Jefferson
tenth grader, cooly directed the sea
son's first show Helping him in the
control were Joshua
Schafer
as switcher; Abel Hall on the cha
racter generator, Dempsey Haupt,
the video operator, and Dawud
Shamsud Din, audio
A crew
including Heather Hart, Nat Lazzar
etti and James Morgan as camera
operators, Connie Markle, the floor
director, Byron Neal, assistant
director, with Brian Neal and Meg
han Raddle as talent, were busy on
the main floor of the hectic studio.
29 Minutes", a magazine format
television program in its fourth year
of production by students enrolled
in television classes at Jefferson
High School, premiered its 1986 87
season November 14 The show,
which featured stories about the
new exhibit at OMSI, special edu
cation classes at Jefferson, and a
say no to drugs" story, will be
cablecast over Rogers channel 21
(eastside) and TCI channel 2 (west
side) again November 21 and 28,
and December 5.
When the show was first pro
duced four years ago, it was done
by students in the middle school
television classes The show is now
produced by second year students
in the high school program How
ever, some middle school features
and commercials are used
According to Patrick Rosenkranz,
television department head, Jeffer
son students improve dramatically
as on camera Talent from this exper
lence. That's not all they learn.
They also learn how to direct. " I t ’s
hard on them. That's the hot seat
The director calls all the shots,"
commented Rosenkranz.
"The
challenge of television is getting
everything done at the right tim e,”
he continued.
The on camera anchor leads and
tags are done in Jefferson's tv stu
dio; all the rest of the production
is done in the field.
This often
means that students lug gear to
unusual locations to gather their
stories For instance, last year "29
Minutes" camera crows met Jesse
Jackson at the Portland airport,
attended a trade show at the Coli
seum, checked out fashions at the
Lloyd Center, rode the stern
wheeler, and took the light rail train
all the way to Gresham |ust to get
their stories
The show has a new look this
year Mark Loring, a local set de
signer, spent two weeks at Jeffer
son as an artist in residence working
with students to design and con
struct a new set
New editions of "29 Minutes
will be produced and aired quarterly
the remainder of the year Be sure
to tune in It is a great way to find
out more about student news and to
see students in action producing
their own abbreviated version of
60 Minutes".
No Arrests,
No Response
The Community Clinic Defense
Coalition (CCDCI demands a re
sponse from the B A T.F. and the
Postal Inspector General: why has
there been no action taken against
the terrorist bomb attempts? On
December 2 of last year, three mail
bombs were sent to abortion clinics
in Portland No arrests have been
made The investigation has come
up with nothing.
Why has nothing been done? If
something has been discovered,
why hasn't the public heard? The
violence and harassment at abortion
clinics has escalated. The legal and
justice systems continue to do little
to protect a woman’s rights to
choice. Ask "W H Y?" on the anni
versary of the bomb attempts Dec.
