It started five years ago when Reverend Roy L Tate set out to meet the
spiritual needs of his church members, and to meet the practical needs of
non members in North Portland's Albina district He started his church at
4237 N Mississippi w ith just he, his w ife Diane Tate and children Shunta
and Troy He was a youthful 31 years old He now has over 100 members,
m any of w hom were involved in a "n e g a tive ” lifestyle, but have since
turned their life aroundl
The success of his five years of achievements was earmarked by the
rocent purchase of a now church facility at 1552 N Killm gsworth
The
significance of that purchase means Reverend Tate now has room to ex
pand the follow ing com m unity action progrants drug and alcohol coun
seling. free food and clothes distribution, com m unity inform ation center,
and other needed programs
As a positive statement to the com m unity, Reverend Tate wants to cap
suli/o the new acquisition w ith a church dedication march and ceremony
on November 23rd However, the city's Special Events Committee denied
his church the right to march in the streets w ith m otorcycle police escorts
Later, however, Reverend Tate appealed that decision to the Portland City
Council and was granted the permission to march Interestingly enough,
the march will not only include over 100 church members, out of state
guests, but some city and county officials as well The dedication services
w ill begin November 19, 20, 21 at 7 30 p m , and end w ith the march on
November 23 at 2 30 p.m
It w ill conclude the week long dedication
ceremonies.
