On Saturday. A ugust 23rd. after
considerable debate, the Black
Leadership Conference endorsed
Margaret Strachan in her bid for
reelection to the City Council, and
voted not to endorse either candi
date in the race between Gladys
McCoy and Glen O tto for the Chair
o f the County Commission

and th oughtful, and a wide range of
opinions were heard before secret
ballots were cast on the separate
endorsement m o tio n s ," said Ron

ership Conference

for convening the Leadership Con
ference this spring was to create a
platform and a process to unify the
Black com m unity's impact on the
governor s race Saturday's deliber

Fall Bridge Tournament
The N orthw est Section of the American Bridge Association will hold its
fifth annual fall tournam ent at the Hilton Hotel in Portland. Oregon.
August 29. 30, 31. and September 1, 1986
Many exciting bridge events are planned, starting w ith a one session
open pairs on Friday night (registration at 7 1 5 P M I , a tw o session open
pairs on Saturday (registration at 12 15 P M l, a tw o session swiss teams
on Sunday (registration at 9 15 A M ). and a one session open pairs on
Monday (registration at 10 30 A M )
An awards banquet and fashion show will be held on Sunday night
beginning at 8:00 P M

The vote was
taken after lengthy discussions
about the merits of the tw o candi
dates vying for the seat Ex County
Commissioner Gladys McCoy and
long tim e politician. Glen Otto
In July ttie Black Leadership Con
ference sent a com m ittee to inter
view the tw o candidates and solicit
their views on issues of im portance
to the Black com m unity A lthougti
the com m ittee's recom m endation
was to endorse Gladys McCoy,
solely on the basis of her responses
to the issues and concerns dis
cussed, the final vote made it clear
that the body had mixed feelings
about providing an endorsement to
a candidate whose pest public per
form ance is seriously questioned on
several im portant policy issues

they are Black although I believe
we are inclined to support and en
courage Black individuals w ho are

candidate will represent our inter
osts well, then we m ust tie true to

group was convened that is to
evaluate, endorse and deliver united
com m unity support to those candi
dates we believe w ill best perform
relative to the concerns and inter
ests of the Black com m unity
Last m onth the Black Leader
ship Conference unanimously voted
to endorse Neil Goldschmidt in his
bid for Governor after interviewing
each of the gubernatorial candi
dates and assessing their positions
on issues of im portance to the Black
com m unity Discussed w ith candi
dates were their proposed strategies
and programs for im proving state
housing, education, health, employ
ment and economic development
opportunities for Blacks in Oregon
During the next few months, several
events w ill be sponsored by the
Black Leadership Conference in the
northeast com m unity to raise funds
and generate support for the Gold
schmidt candidacy
