gram, Ruben said, will consist of the
follow ing
introduction to A frican
American
storytelling;
African
American poets, poetry and poetry
w riting, African American games
for elementary and high school stu
dents, and film reviews on Dr Mar
tin Luther King, Jr
Ruben and
Askari w ill pay a tribute to Dr King
by way of a performance in his
honor.
Besides the above, Janice Scrog
gins, a local pianist, M cKinly Burt,
an educator, and B J Edwards, a
beauty consultant, w ill make pre
sentations
to
the
youngsters
Scroggins
w ill discuss
A frican
American religion, survival songs.
Harriet Tubman and the under
ground railroad
Burt w ill give a
discussion on A frican American in
ventors, and Edwards will speak on
the sub|ect of personal hygiene, hair
care, and give tips on how to dress.
Drug and alcohol awareness will
also be discussed during the Enrich
ment Program
W hen the program is com
pleted, I hope that each student
leaves w ith a sense of pride that
w ill guide them in everything they
attem pt in the future

The 44 students w ho are partici
pating in the program appear to
enjoy it "I have a lot of fun here,
plus, I can learn m ore about my
h is to ry ,'’ said Isis Cohens, age 12
and a 6th grader at Tubman Middle
School W hen Isis was asked whe
ther she had learned anything new
since attending the summer pro
gram, she responded, "Yes, Ruby
is a good actress and she is nice
Isis 6 year old sister. Sugar, is also
in the program.
Idris O'Forrall. age 10, a 6th
grader at W hitaker Middle School,
said (resides being in the program to
learn more about A frican American
history, he is there to learn how to
respect and get along w ith others

charged $6 at the gate and non
members, $7. The charge for stu
dents, ages 13-17, is $3 and children
12 and under get in for free
