Tracing one s lineage is in vogue
these days Nearly half the written
requests for assistance received by
America's libraries and historical so
cieties seek information about
someone’s ancestry.
Before you go running off to
search for your roots, be careful
or you could find yourself barking
up the wrong family tree Records,
if you are lucky enough to locate
them, often contain erroneous in
formation, supplied by incompetent
or indifferent clerks or informants
who had decided to anglicize their
names or fib about their ages and
places of origin.
To make the search a little easier,
try following these tips:
• Begin w ith yourself. Fill out a
family chart to the best of your
memory.
Refer to letters, old
photographs, B'bles ;r.,thing the’
might provide clues.
• In te rv ie w relatives Much of
the information you seek may be
stored away in relatives' attics or
basements.

signed for the contemporary Amen
can family which may have a work
ing mother or a single parent as its
head.
"Most parents want to get invol
ved in their children's education,
but they may not be sure how to do
it," says NEA President Mary Hat-
wood Futrell. "Thet's why we took
on this project. We wanted to give
parents some practical suggestions
to help make what their children are
learning in school relevant to every
day life.”
