Challenges III
Even though the weather was
cool, Delta Park was hot last Satur
day as 6 teams competed against
each other at the third annual Com
munity Team Challenges
After the dust settled, five hours
and ten events later. Dr Edward
W ard’s "Winners” held up to their
name as the team captured top
honors Second place went to Al
bina Youth Opportunity School
(AOS and the Urban League
took the third place title
Other
teams who competed included the
Ebony Rose Ski Club, Videomania,
and the P 0 Raiders

ing team, winning for the second
year in a row. The team placed
1st and 2nd in 7 out of 10 events

In addition to the egg toss, sack
race, relays, football, and obstacle
course, two new events were
included this year the Het Shot'
basketball game, and volleyball
Dennis Carline of the P.O. Raiders
scored a high of 55 points in the
Hot Shot competition, followed by
Sandra Jackson of the Urban
League team, and Lisa Channel of
the Winners, both scoring 45 points
apiece.
Rose City Connection, organizers
and producers of the event felt that
this year's Challenge competition
was a great success. According to
Charles Stoudamire, RCC member
and head official, "the teams were
really prepared, and there was some
outstanding talent displayed on all
of the teams this year."
Proceeds from the event go to
build the organization’s scholarship
fund. Their goal is to raise $5,000
by the end of 1986 Other sponsors
of the Challenges were Nike, Inc.,
Miller Brands, Inc., American Red
Cross, Portland Bottling Company,
7-Up and Rogers Cablesystems.

Fireworks Can Be No Picnic
For Your Pet
When fireworks explode, many
dogs panic and may crawl under
something to hide, shaking with
fear
Others may choke them
selves to death in their own back
yard as they struggle against their
chain to escape the terror of the
sound; or they may bolt through
the window or locked screen door
and run great distances only to drop
exhausted, confused and lost
Here are some tips for owners to
protect their pets during the July
4th week:
1 Never leave the pet alone
during a fireworks display or
allow the pet around neighbor
hood fireworks bursts
The
best place for the pet is in
side the house where the
owner can provide comfort and
security.
2.
Make sure the pet wears
a buckle-type collar or harness
with a current license so the pet
can be returned easily to the
owner, if it does run in panic
This is vital for pets which
"never leave the house" also
3. Pets with a known history of
sound shyness can often bene
fit from tranquilizers from a
veterinarian.
If a pet does become lost during
the holiday excitement, the owner
should look for it immediately in
the neighborhood Signs should be
posted in the area and the owner
should visit the animal shelter in
Troutdale the next day
Keep
looking because often pets will still
bo trying to get home for weeks
Non pet owners can extend their
humaneness toward animals by
curtailing their use of fireworks if it
is obviously causing distress for an
animal
It is an excellent time for
parents to discuss with their
children that kindness to animals
includes being thoughtful about
fireworks.
