Atlanta, GA: "Living the D ream "
Mavvive plans are being finalized
for ihc Jan. 20 first f ederal holiday
honoring the Rev Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. and his universal quest for
peace and n on -violen ce. Entitled
“ Living the Dream,’’ the celebration
o f Dr. King's 57th birthday anniver
vary will be launched on Jan. 12 with
a nine-day panoram a o f special
programs that pay tribute to the slain
civil rights leaders and spotlight the
participation o f world leaders and
dignitaries, distinguished guests and
celebrities from all walks o f life and
the people o f A tlanta, Dr. King's
hom e tow n. The observances will
culminate on Ja. 20 when the entire
nation pauses to mark the first
national legal observance o f Dr.
King's birthday by the Government of
tfie United Slates.
Extensive observances are planned
by the Federal Holiday Commission,
which was established by Congress,
and by the A tlanta-based Martin
Luther King, Jr. Center for N o n ­
violent Social Change. Special events
will be held throughout the nation
and in other parts o f the world in­
cluding a Washington, LX tribute by
the U .S . C ongress and the Jan. 16
placement o f a bust o f Dr. King in
the nation 's C apitol. On Jan. 19,
Anglican Bishop Desmond M. Tutu
of South Africa will take a major role
in a day-long national conference on
Apartheid.

Americans to join the January
programs and "be a part of the living
history which celebrates the legacy,
life and dream of America’s hero and

programs "a time o f celebration,
thanksgiving and renewal."
Albina Library
The A lbina branch o f the M ult­
nomah County Library will hold a
Martin L uther King. Jr. Birthday
Party for youngsters on Wednesday.
Jan. 15 at 4 .00 p.m . The branch
library is located at 3605 N.E. 15th.
Jan. 20, 1986 will mark the first ob­
servance of the Federal legal holiday
honoring Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
The R egional O ffice o f the Fish
and W ildlife Service has joined ihc
Bureau of Land Management and the
Bonneville Power Administration in
sponsoring a special observance
program scheduled for Jan. 10 at the
Bonneville Power auditorium located
at 1002 N .E . H olladay St. The
program will be held at 10:00 a m .,
and tlx: featured speaker will be Mar
(in Luther King III. (he son o f Dr.
King.
F ollow ing the program in P or­
tland, there will be a reception for
Marlin I uther King III held in the
Red Lion, Lloyd Center.

Yes, that's right. The Urban
League o f P ortland's Jan. 15
program honoring Dr Martin Luther
King, Jr. will not have a $5 admission
fee as stated in a previous press
release It will be f r e t o f charge to the
public. The program, which will in­
clude a dramatic presentation by Ur­
ban 1 caguc President Herb Cawthor-
ne. will begin at 8 p.tn. at Maranatha
Church. 4222 N.E. 12th Ave.
The presentation will feature excer­
pts from Dr. King's public addresses
and serm ons, and will be accom ­
panied by the New Hope Missionary
Baptist Church Mass Choir and the
Maranatha Inspirational Choir. The
audience is encouraged to bring
donations o f clothing, canned food,
cooking utensils and other Heins of
use to the homeless.
Please note that the performance is
on the day o f Dr. King's birthday,
Jan. 15. The legal holiday will be ob­
served on Monday, Jan. 20.

In conjunction with Marlin Luther
King, Jr.’s birthday, and in keeping
with his philosophy o f non-violent
demonstration against mjuvig.gv. the
Northeast N eighborhoods Against
Crime will kick off 1986 with a picket
agamt drug dealing, a blatant and in­
creasing destructive element of Street
Crime.
The picket will be held Jan. 11,
3 00-5:00 p in. on the coiner of N.E.
Alberta and Grand. Signs will be
provided for the picketers. For more

Freedom from
smoking kit
available
The American Lung Association
o f O regon announced today the
“ Freedom From Sm oking" kit for
sm okers w ho want to quit are
available at no charge until Jan. 31.
This “ Quit S m ok in g” program
normally costs $4, but in order to en­
courage sm okers to make a New
Year's R esolution and kick their
sm oking habit now , the American
Lung A ssociation is m aking this
special offer.
The kit includes two brochures on
how to quit smoking, a smoker’s sclf-
test as well as a program which helps
the person cope with withdrawal
symptoms, social pressures, and make
the personal commitment necessary to
successfully quit.
No matter what age. a person can
reduce the risk o f cancer, heart
disease, and lung disorders by quit
ting.
Over 11,000 “ Freedom From
Smoking" kits have been distributed
in Oregon in the past Live years. They
are used by doctors, hospitals, quit
smoking programs, and the individual
smtiker who is ready to quit.
The American Lung Association of
O regon, the "C hristm as Seal"
People, has sought to reduce the in­
cidence of lung disease in Oregon sin­
ce 1915.
