health education fo r self-presersation
and w ill fo cu s on cancer and o th e r
high risk disorders that a ffe ct Black
A m e ric a n s in c lu d in g h y p e rte n s io n ,
heart disease, diabetes and o b esity.
The national launch o f H ealth W atch
ssas held at the C o lu m b ia U n iv e rs ity
faculty house in Ness Y o rk C ity where
a n u m b e r o f the c o u n tr y 's le a d in g
h e a lth e d u c a to rs , p h y s ic ia n s , c o m ­
m un ity leaders and c o m m u n ica tio n s
specialists were in attcndence.

habits that often increase their risk o f
disease and early death. For example,
20 percent o f all Black deaths in the
U n ite d States are due to cancer, and

grant o t $500,000 fro m the N a tio n a l
Cancer In s titu te , D iv is io n o f Cancer
P re v e n tio n an d C o n tr o l to he lp
develop the he a lth in fo r m a tio n and
p r o m o tio n services c o n c e p t. " T h e
award represents an innovative depar­
tu re fro m tr a d itio n a l approaches in
p ro v id in g he a lth in fo r m a tio n to the
Black c o m m u n ity , says D r. G o d w in .
W e see o u r m is s io n as n o t ju s t
providing in fo rm a tio n , but pro vid ing
the kn o w le d g e , co m p re h e n sio n and
m o tiv a tio n to m o d ify life style s that
p ro te ct an d p ro lo n g the h e a lth and
qu ality o f life o f Black A m e rica n s."
The H ealth W atch educational and
m otiva tion al in fo rm a tio n and p ro m o ­
tio n services w ill be a v a ila b le in a
variety o f m u lti-m e d ia packages, in ­
c lu d in g t e le c o m m u n ic a tio n s ,
brochures, posters, newsletters, slides
and video tapes, broadcast advertising
and p rin t p ro m o tio n ; special events
such as h e a lth fa irs , e x h ib its , c o m ­
m u n ity th e a tre , se m in a rs and c o n ­
ferences.
A d d it io n a lly , H e a lth W a tc h w ill
cover a bro a d range o f o th e r health
issues and c o n c e rn s in th e B la ck
c o m m u n ity in c lu d in g s m o k in g ,
a lc o h o l a n d d ru g abuse, stress
management, weight co n tro l, diet and
