Legislative employees to get holiday
Señale President John Kitzhaber
and House Speaker Vera Kaiz today
announced that a ll legislative em
ployees w ill have Monday. Jan 20 o ff
to celebrate (he birthday o f M artin
Luther King, Jr.
This declaration is contrary to the
Executive Departm ent's announce
ment that a ll state agencies would
remain open on Jan. 20.
It is customary for the I egislalive
branch to follow the directives o f the
(xecutive Department in the obser
vance o f holidays. However, K itz
haber and Katz said in their
statement that the intent o f the legisla
tion passed this year clearly
establishes Presidents' Day in
February and M artin I uther King's
birthday in January as holidays for
those employees not under collective
Christmas tree
has more uses
In (he weeks fo llo w in g Dec. 23,
many homeowners have a used
Christmas tree on their hands.
Kay M cN eilan, Oregon State
University Extension home gardening
agent, cautions those planning to
burn the tree that by this time it is
well-dried out and extremely fla m
mable. Disposal o f the tree by b u r
ning can be dangerous, particularly if
you decide to burn it indoors in a
fireplace or woodslove.
I f the tree is to be burned in a
fireplace, first cut it into small pieces.
Don't burn large portions o f the tree's
boughs and trunk at the same time
I ced the pieces into the wood stove or
fireplace slowly, one at a time.
besides b urning, there are other
ways to get m axim um use out o f a
retired Christm as tree around (he
home.
McNeilan suggests having the tree
ground into sawdust if you have ac
cess to a mechanical tree grinder. The
sawdust can then be used as a mulch
around flowers and shrubs in the
home landscape.
I f a mechanical grinder isn’t avail
able. strip the boughs from the trunk
anyl cut it up for firewood. Use the
bolighs as a m ulch around low-
growing landscape plants.
A discarded C hristm as tree can
even be used as a sort o f bird feeder
lor a time after the holidays. Simply
set the tree up in the backyard and
sprinkle it liberally w ith bird seed.
I he neighborhood birds will discover
it shortly, bringing their lively cheer
fulness to your wintcry landscape.

seeking Big Brothers/Sisters
No Need to Fear
Low Prices are Here!

The North Portland Youth Service
is once again conducting a campaign
to recruit volunteers fo r its Big
Brother/Big Sister program. Volun
teers agree to spend tw o to three
hours per week with a Little Brother
or Sister enjoying such activities as
hiking, skating, going to the
zoo—whatever they decide to do.
Sometimes they just hang out at home
and ta lk —what is im portant is that
they have time together and that the
little brother or sister has someone to
talk to, someone who cares.
Right now the N orth Portland
Youth Service Center has many
children on its waiting list who would
love to have an older friend. I f you
would like to be that friend, call for
more information at 285-0627 and ask
for Elinor Gwynn.
