Veterans’ C o u n c il, died in A p ril ol
heart failure at the age ol 5V

Vccording to Ihogerson, M itchell
served in the I S A rm y fo r three
seats as a second lieutenant and was
disabled during his service M itchell
entered the I diversity ot M aryland
alter leaving the A rm s, and earned a
degree in agronomy, which deals with
crop
p ro d u c tio n
and
soil
management.
M itch e ll kept active in the Arm y
Reserves in Portland, and retired as a
m ajor, she said He was also very ac
live in helping veterans, serving lo r
nine seats as a leader ol the Oregon
Disabled Veterans' C ouncil and for
lour sears as administrator ot solun
teet services at the Veterans' Hospital
in P o rtla n d . He volunteered mans
hours tnmsell at the hospital, where
he was " a general morale b o o ste r,'’
Ihogerson said Mitchell wrote letters
lor veterans, he visited patients and
their fam ilies, and he delivered care
packages to patients, she said
Mitchell was also a member ol the
H ills b o ro O p tim is ts ' C lu b , and lie
was active in Mended Hearts, a group
lor people who have had open heart
surgery
As it that weren't enough, Mitchell
volunteered as a tu to r in H ills b o ro
area schools and as a leadei ol several
youth groups He was also active in
A lle n le m p le f h ris tia n M e th o d ist
(. hutch in Northeast Portland, where
he was a steward and member ol the
senior choir.
"A n d he was doing all this with Ins
heart c o n d itio n ,” said Ihogerson.
"W e would have a w orld ol movers
and shakers i f each o f us gave as
much as he did "
