I he m odel is based on a pro gra m
in itia te d in Ju ly I9K5 w h ic h has
dem onstrated how homeless fam ilies
can becom e e c o n o m ic a lly self-
s u ffic ie n t w ith the help o f extended
shelter and support services. I his e f­
fo rt is based on a p u b lic/p riva te part
nership in vo lvin g the ( o u n ly D e p a rt­

drom e) has stim ulated increased fund
ing and tremendous growth in the field
o f im m u n o lo g y , we have yet to d is ­
cover a cure or develop a vaccine to
counter this crisis. We have learned to
better screen serum replacement sam ­
ples to lim it the num ber o f hospital-
and m edical-caused transm issions o l
the disease, yet the disease continues to
spread at a rale exceeding 100 percent
a n n u a lly . W ith th is type o f g ro w th ,
we cannot emphasize the im portance
o f prevention in countering the A ID S
cnsis.
As A ID S em erged in our society,
the m echanism s o l spread fo r th is
sexually-transmissible disease led many
to assume that hom osexuality was a
p re re q u isite lo r the developm ent ot
A ID S W e now know that h e tero
sexual tra n s m is s io n o l A ID S is not
only possible but, in tact, is accounting
fo r an in crea sing num ber ot A ID S
cases in Am erica I he in itial predont
inance o l hom osexuals a c q u irin g
A ID S was largely due to a section ol
this com m unity representing the in tro
d u c tio n o l the syndrom e in to A m er
ica, just as a dav care center m ig h t
in tro d u c e a flu to the c o m m u n ity
as a whole
W hat can we do to pre ve n t our
getting A ID S ’
Since it no rm ally takes fro m three
to live veals tor M D S to show itself,
the u n fo rtu n a te tru th is th a t tens to
hundreds o l thousands ot Am ericans
have already been exposed to the
A ID S virus th ro u g h heterosexual ac
tivihes. Areas ol higher sexual promts
cuity such as night hie cultures, high
schools and colleges w ill probably jo in

vectors ot spread lo r A ID S m the
not to distant fu tu re . Fortunately we
all have the powei Io choose our own

the safety o l this personal choice has
been the spread Horn the promiscuous
partner to the fa ith tu l spouse.
O utside ot celibacy or a long term
m onogam ous relationship, the single
m ost im p o rta n t to o l to prevent the
spread o l A ID S is the c o n d o m or
“ ru b b e r". It is generally accepted that
a condom w ill prevent the spread o l
the viru s fro m one p a rtn e r to the
other.

cases is w ith in the I \ drug users o l
this scxiety. In tact much o l the earls
evidence o l heterosexual transmission
o l A ID S was observed in spouses ol
I \ drug users W hile I \ drug de

People w ill argue th a t the fe a r o f
" d i r t y ” needles may act as a d e te r­
rent to some who m ight otherwise ex­
periment w ith I.V drug use I know I
c a n ’ t resolve this a rg u m e n t in th is
c o lu m n , but I can co m m e n t on one
aspect o f o u r s o c ie ty ’ s a p p ro a c h lo
drug use.
In the sum m er o l the M c G o v c rn -
N ixon campaign, I had a highly educa­
tional lesson in the Am erican drug in ­
dustry A t this tune I had a summer

use, but has removed the need fo r the
