Change a kid's life
The N o rth P ortla nd Y o u th Service
C e n te r is c u rre n tly seeking v o lu n ­
teers to participate in its Big B rother/
B ig S iste r p ro g ra m . T h e p ro g ra m
needs people w ho like kids and w ho
have a few e xtra h o u rs per week to
share w ith a young friend. These kids
are lonely, many come fro m troubled
backgrounds, and they need the com ­
p a n io n s h ip , g u id a n ce and f r ie n d ­
ship o f a m ature a d u lt. Big B rothers
and Big Sisters take their partners on
outings, they ride bikes, they go to the
zoo, and they spend a quiet evening
together w a tch in g T V . W'hat ts most
im p o rta n t to the c h ild , ho w e ver, is
th a t he o r she has som eone special
who listens and who cares.
The Big B ro th e rs /B ig Sisters p ro ­
gram does not take to o m uch tim e ,
ju s t a few h o u rs per w eek. V o lu n ­
teers are m atche d w ith c h ild re n ac­
cord in g to interest areas and general
co m p a ta h ility and o rie n ta tio n to the
pro gra m and o n g o in g su p p o rt serv­
ices are also provided.

Summer vacation becomes
a lesson in learning

••M y p o litica l activism in Portland
is centered around anti-apartheid,
said Paquita Garatea, who recently
returned fro m a visit to I uskadt.
Fuskadt- or the Basque Provinces,

Spain and three in Southern I lance
Hie provinces sit in the Pyreneese
m ountains bordering I rance and
Spain and stretching fro m the Has ol

They settled in the Boise, Idaho area
and later some fa m ily members
moved to I astetn Oregon.
Garatea had never been to the
"Basque c o u n try " and this summer
while taking a break fro m Portland
Suite U niversity (PSU ), she went there
to visit relatives and Iricnds.
