The situation between church and state is more serious than one may thin k.
We walk by schools, child care centers sponsored by churches, offerin g
"S u m m er B ib le " prog.am s and recreation fo r our young everyday, w ith ou t a
second glance. The ch u rch and its fu n c tio n in o u r c o m m u n ity is taken fo r
granted W ell, not far away in the state o f Nebraska, Pastor Everett Sileven o f
P a th Baptist Church went straight to ja il and so d id members fo r conducting a
church schoolas part o f their religious m inistry.
Pastor Everett Sileven o f P a th Baptist C hurch in 1 ouisville, Nebraska
testifies at a Subcom m ittee hearing on the C o n stitu tio n and religious liberty,
June 26, 1984, in W ashington, D .C .:
"T h e re are now approaching 7,(XX) cases in this co u n try where Christians are
being prosecuted. Just recently in M ilw aukee, tw o pastors came to me and said
f
I
we had started a church in a home, and we were told that i f we opened our
Bibles one m ore tim e in these homes, we w ould go to ja il.
"T o d a y there are parents in H o n d a w ho are about to lose their children
because they refused to send them to a state-approved school. It is not because
the q u ality and academic achievement is supenor. Today , as I sit here, there is a
church in Redding, C a lifo rn ia that is battling the state bureaucracy over its
c o n tro l o f its day care center.
“ In tie rin g , Nebraska, the C hurch o f C hrist was prosecuted. Its school had
to move across the state line in to W yom ing. In M o rrill, the Independent Baptist
church had to move across the state line to operate.
" I n N o rth Platte, my w o nd erful friend, brother Bob tie lls th o rp e spent 9.1
days in ja il. They have levied fines against hint o f $200.00 a day, against his
church A nd now, w ith in the next 10 days, they are going to sell his personal
property, his home, and his church building to collect those fines.
" I n Louisville, that is another story. In 1981, ou r church was padlocked fo r
the first tim e In 1982 I was arrested fou r times, spent 120 days in Cass C ounty
ja il. O n O ctober 18, 1982, there were almost 100 praying ministers w ho were
not a part o f the case at all, w h o were carried o u t— physically rem oved— by 18
armed officers, and the church padlocked fo r the second time.
" Then in 1981, there were seven o f my men w ho went to ja il, their wives and
12 children tied the state to avoid arrest. A n d then I also, even in spite o f the
fact that I had filed briefs in m y case, and my daughter had done the same, the
judge put out a warrant fo r o u r arrest.
" I recently relum ed to the state o f Nebraska on A p ril 26th, vo lu n ta rily
com ing to the cou rt, v o lu n ta rily closing our school now , since we have a new
law to operate under, w aiting un til it comes in to effect on July IO th.
" I he judge was vindictive and he sentenced me to eight m onths in ja il,
stating right over the bench that he w ould have like to have given me tw o years
in the state penitentiary. He adm itted that they were not bound by the C o n
stitutio n in this case.
"T h a t is in the record. They do not believe that the C o n stitu tio n applies.
And this is one o f the problem s we’ re facing A n d also, I was fo rbidd en to have
w ritin g materials to w rite b txiks and jvamphlets while I was in ja il. I am now
out on appeal.
" I t ’s very interesting to me, Senator |lla tc h |, that in Nebraska, the A ttorney
General o f our stale was impeached by the I egislature, and the Supreme C o urt

overturned the impeachment. He was then indicted on three counts o f felony
by the G rand Jury. He was given a $10,000 bond, he was allow ed to sign fo r
his. I was given $100,000 perform ance bond, and $10,000 cash bond. I refused

Lea W illia m s , m u s ic ia n , p h ilo s o p h e r, and a ll-ro u n d
civic-m inded good guy —
Les came to Portland, Oregon, in March, 1947. He has trav-
elec throughout the U.S.A. He has played music with Wait
er Bridges, Nat King Cole, Diana Washington, Lionel Hamp
ton, Joe Turner, Sanders King, Sonny King and many
other less known musicians and singers.
However, this summer I have seen Les on the street corner
at 17th and N.E. ALberta St. teaching and sharing his
wealth of experience and knowledge with young potential
musicians who live in our immediate neighborhood. These
children range in age from 6 to 11 years old and are building
upon Les' knowledge and their talent. Their instruments are
saxophones, flutes and clarinets.
It is heart warming to see a man like Les sharing himself
along with his musical knowledge with young children. Les
told me that, “ The rest of my life will be spent in sharing my
self, my experience, my talent with my community. I love to
see growth, development and I love children. Come down
and bring your flute and play with us; call your own shot.”
I said OK.
The true spirit of a Royal Esquire is sharing. Major commun
ity service benefit coming upl
