THE RICH KEEP GETTING RICHER
I f I know anything about basket
ball at all, I know thia: every general
manager in the Pacific Division is
pulling their hair out at the roots. I f
there was any chance at keeping the
lakers from repeating as N BA king
pins, it’ s gone now. Phoenix Suns’
general manager, Jerry Colangelo,
made a deal Sunday night to trade
former Portland TrailBlazer, Maurice
I.ucas, to the W orld Champion Los
Angeles lakers.
The la ke rs shortchanged the Suns
by sending two future second-round
draft choices to the Suns for ’ ’The
Enforcer.” To make room for the
hard-playing big man, the Lakers de
cided to let Bob M cAdoo go. By re
leasing M cA dix), the Lakers can pay
l.ukc and maybe still have enough left
over to offer A .C . Green a decent
contract.
The Suns have made a few ques
tionable trades in the last few years
that have weakened that franchise
considerably. Dennis Johnson for
Rick Robey was almost hysterical.
Maurice to the champs o f your own
division « hysterical
Champion Portland TrailBla/ers and
he w ill add mightily to the board ef
forts o f the Lakers, la k e r General
Manager Jerry West made the deal to
use Luke as a backup center on
defense and a power forward on
offense.
How does this trade affect the
TrailBlazcrs? It doesn’t really The
TrailBlazcrs only play for playoff
spots anyway so it's no big deal other
than Luke w ill still be lowering the
hammer six times during the season.

LEAGUE RULE CHANG E
Among the 1985 season’s 12 new
regulations is one that grants defen
sive players an increased right to bat
tle receivers for the ball in passing sit
uations and another that prohibits a
team from changing the color o f hand
and arm coverings from week to
week.
“ There w ill be fewer calls on some
thing that shouldn't have been called
anyway," said Jack Reader, assistant
supervisor o f officiating for the N FL,
o f the clarification on pass interfer
ence rulings. “ We wanted to allow
incidental contact without calling
fouls ”
Under the new rule, interference
can only be called when a defender
clearly and intentionally restricts a re
ceiver’s attempt to catch the ball. So
long as the defender is himself legiti
mately trying to get to the ball, there
is no penalty for any contact that
results.
"T h e new interpretation is that
when both offense and defense are
playing the ball, we w ill not have in
terference called," Reader said.
"They (the owners| wanted to make
sure the foul was there and not put the
defense at a disadvantage like we have
been almost every tim e."
Reader gets no argument from the
league's defensive backs. “ Finally,
it's nice to know, as a defensive back,
we can play football in its truest
sense," Seattle's A ll Pro safety Kenny
Easley said.
San Francisco defensive back
Dwight Hicks, another veteran with a
reputation for a physical brand o f
pass defense, said the rule change
might dictate a significant rethinking
o f aerial strategy.
“ The new rule is going to give the
defensive backs more leeway playing
the b a ll," Hicks said. " I think we
may also sec a reverse in the trend
toward small, fast receivers. I think
those little guys are going to have a
tough t i m e . "
