Portland Observer, August 21, 1985, Page 5 Frankie and Murray to appear at the Royal Esquire Club ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK Joe "B e a n " Keller, Entertainment E ditor Bobby Murray Born in Nagoya, J p n, Guitarist Bobby Murray grew up in a military family whose international travels brought them to Tacoma, Washington, where Bobby played in a rock & roll band with high school friend Robert Cray. In I973, bobby moved to Los Angeles where partici­ pation in battles o f the bands with such artists as Vernon Garrett, Ted Taylor, and Z.Z. H ill led to stints with Albert Collins and with the Sweet Inspirations. As musical director for Frankie I ee in the late seventies, Bobby made yearly tours o f California and Texas, with stops in Kansas City, I as Vegas and Portland Since settling in the Bay area in 1980, he has been house guitarist for the Marin County, Sonoma County, San Francisco and Sacramento Blues Festivals and for the "B lue Monday P arty" live radio broadcast and has performed at every Monterey Jazz Festival since 1981 In 1984, he toured Japan with the San Francisco Blues Festival. Bobby’s film and video credits include Cork Marcheschi’s film . .Survivors (in which he backs John Lee Hooker and Lady Bianco) and the Videotunet video-documentary Perry M ayfield—Poet I aureate o f the Blues Bobby Murray appears as guitarist and session leader on Frankie Lee's Hightonc album, The Ladies and the Babies, and is currently working festivals, concerts and club dates as Frankie's guitarist and musical director. Frankie Lee Frankie Lee, the Texas Blues-and- Soul Man, grew up singing in his Mart, Texas, church and, in I960, after a year as a professional gospel singer with the Highway Q C ’s and other groups, auditioned successfully for the Ike A Tina Turner Revue . Moved to Houston in 1963 and recorded “ Full Time l over" (an answer to Little Johnny Taylor’s smash, "P art l ime 1 o ve") and seven other sides for the Peacock label presents Jeffrey Osborne Frankie performed at the 1983 and 1984 Monterey Jazz Festivals and toured Japan last winter with the San Francisco Blues Festival . . .
