Auditions to be held
Open audition« will ba held for dancara and modal« who are intareat-
ad in performing in Rosa City Connection'« Fall Benefit Fashion Show.
Audition for dancara will ba held Saturday. August 17, from 2 30 p.m.
to 5 p.m at the North Portland Public Library. 612 N Killingaworth
Dancer« auditioning should have a minimum of one year axparianca in
Jazz or ballet Choreography axparianca is especially desired. The audi
tion will require each dancer to perform a 2 - 3 minute number Dancers
should bring their own music recorded on cassette tape.
Auditions for models will be held Saturday. August 24 from 12 noon
to 3 p m at the Matt Dishman Community Centar. 77 N.E. Knott. Male
and female models, high school age and over, with runway model ex­
perience are eligible to audition. Male models are especially encour­
aged to audition.

this past Saturday to celebrate
Community Unity Day. The day
was filled with plcniclng. exhibits,
games and music.
Many of those attending saw
old friends while being enter­
tained on both ends of the park
At one end of the park ware the
disco sounds of the Chaz along
with soma of Portland's finest
rappers, while at the other and
could be heard the live sounds of
the R of R Band, the Flirt Band and
CleanCut with a special appear
ance by the Strawberry Gamblers.
The event was sponsored by
the B U.F.. and entertainment
was provided by B E A N.

As the crowd hurried to the front of the stage, they
were being entertained by the vocal sounds of the
Strawberry Gamblers The Gamblers consist of four
sisters living In Vancouver. Washington. They have
been capturing their audiancaa for the past few years

Morris Day strikes again
Morris Day. the singer/actor who almost stole the show as Prince s
arch rival in "Purple Rain," is definitely a star on the rise To prove the
point. Morris decided to shoot the cover photograph of his debut solo
album. The Color of Success. 44 stores above Times Square, with famed
aerial photographer Peter B Kaplan (the Statue of Liberty s official
photographer) behind the lens
If you're hip to such things, then you already know that one of Mor
ris' most popular contributions to "Purple Rain" was The Bird, a dance
step which had fans flapping their wings' across the country With the
release of The Color o f Success. Morris is promising yet another national
dance craze named after the first single set for release on August 21 —
"The Oak Tree ' No word yet on how this dance step goes, but Morris
fans are getting ready to shake their leaves, so to speak
With the new album due out on September 30 Morris will embark on
a U S concert tour this fall A new movie is also in the works, part of
Morris' recently signed three-picture deal with 20th Century Fox.

Lou Rawls plays Portland
In 1966. Lou's Love Is A Hurlin' Thing" received Grammy nominations
for best Rhythm and Blues recording solo vocal performance Lou won
his first Grammy in 1967 for best R ft B vocal performance on Dead End
Street The song was also nominated for best R if B recording
A Grammy nomination for Your Good Thing (Is About to End) followed
in 1969. and in 1971. Lou won the Grammy for best R ff B performance
for Natural Man.
Moving on to 1976 when Lou signed with Philadelphia International
Records, he began an association with two masters of record produc
tion. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff Lou then received two Grammy
nominations for You'll Never Tint! (Another Love Like Mine) and Groovy
People. You 'll Never I inti went on to become a Gold and Platinum selling
record in 1977
Lou came into the 80s releasing more hit songs such as H hen the Night
Comes, Hind Heneath Mv Wings and others Lou is also the force behind
Lou Rawls' Parade of Stars telethon and an honorary chairman for
U N C F.
Lou will be appearing on Sept 8th at the Civic Auditorium along with
Portland's finest male vocalist Calvin Walker
Calvin Walker is known throughout Portland as the most dynamic
vocalist, has played most of the city's finest night spots along with mini
casuals Calvin recently won the N W Video Award for his video. The
Perfect Crime and is soon to be releasing a 46 entitled Slow, Slow Down He
is also working on an album.
