Pipelines... make good neighbors America has over 220 000 miles ot petroleum pipelines carrying crude oil and products to refineries and storage terminals across the United States Each day more than 1 5 billion ton miles of crude oil and products move through this network These pipelines have a safety record second to none in the transportation industry and we want you to help us keep it that way Shadow Project volunteer painting shadow on Portland sidewalk (Photo: Kris Altucher) Shadow project in Portland by Nathaniel Scott As they made (heir way to work Tuesday, August 6, the downtown early birds d idn't get worms. What they got were hundreds o f silhouettes projecting what downtown Portland would look like in the event o f a nu clear bombing. The silhouettes — "shadows" — were a part o f the International Shadow Project commemorating the 40th anniversary o f the bombing o f Hiroshima. "T he purpose o f the shadow p ro j ect |ss as) to vividly remind people that nuclear arms destroy life — all life ," Alan Gussow, co-director o f international project, was reported to have said in New York C ity’s A I R Gallery. In Portland, Donna G Slcpack, another co-director, said, "T h is morning the pavements o f downtown Portland are covered with a collage ol human images. The density o f these ghost like forms simulates the mass murder that results from the detona tion o f a nuclear b o m b ." Mike Russo, a Portland artist who helped design the silhouettes made the statement: “ We dropped the fi's l bomb, we dropped the second bomb; we must ask ourselves: arc we going to drop the third atom bomb?” Russo, speaking with a highly emotional voice also wanted to know: "W h o arc we (Americans) to define what human rights are?" He con cluded by saying, “ No one has the right to demand 20 m illion 40 m illion lives be sacrificed." 39 GROUND MARKER CASING VENT When you see signs like those shown above they tell you that there s a pipeline nearby It its underground you can t see it. ot course But it s there working quietly to provide energy lor you and other consumers throughout this nation Some ot these signs list the commodity transported in the pipeline the name ot the operator and a telephone number where the operator s representative can be reached at all times Although pipelines have an e«ceptionally good safety record once in a while a leak can occur Indications of a leak might include • A strange or unusual odor in the vicinity ol a pipeline • A hissing or roaring sound (caused by petroleum or product escaping from a pipeline) • A dense white cloud or fog • A spot ot dead or discolored vegetation • An accumulation of petroleum A look ahead to the year 2000 What w ill be the stale o f Black America in the yeat 2000? Dr Andrew F. Brimmer, presi dent o f the Washington-based con sulting firm Brimmer A Company Inc., and a member o f the Black Enterprise Board o f Economists, makes some far-reaching predictions for the future o f Black America in a special report commemorating the 15th anniversary o f Mack Enterprise in the August issue. The economic gap between the races should narrow considerably in the next 15 years, believes Brimmer, with Blacks comprising approxi mately 13.6 percent o f the total popu lation o f the nation, holding 11 4 per cent o f all jobs, and sharing in 10.6 percent o f total money income. The net numbers o f Black entrepre neurs w ill increase, and there w ill be diversification mto new and expand ing fields. These businessmen will continue to market prim arily to Black consumers but w ill be faced with increased competition from major corporations. "The typical Black firm w ill con tinue to be a wholly owned proprie torship engaged prim arily in retail trade or in the provisions o f personal services," writes the former member o f the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors in Mack Enterprise. Expected to grow faster than the economy as a whole are the travel and transportation industries. There will be an increasing number o f Black businesses on the supply side o f the recreation and entertainment markets (hotel, resorts, and travel agencies) and with Blacks already holding an 83 percent share o f all ICC certificates, their future in these industries seems secure. Manufacturing, construction, com munications, and high-tech indus tries should expand at a moderate pace, with more Black firms finding their niche in these markets. Black financial institutions and insurance companies, on the other hand, may experience a weakening of position as financial services firms gain momentum. "T h e main obsta cles w ill be a lack o f capital and the head start the leading financial insti tutions already have," says Brim mer. "These w ill pose enormous hurdles for Black firms — along with other small enterprises that mav at tempt to compete in the financial services arena."
