For the first time in almost 20 years, the N A S TA D (N a­
tional Association of State and Temtonal Apprenticeship
Directors) will come to Portland for their national conven- -
tion at the Hilton Hotel In coordination with this event, the
Apprenticeship and Training Division of the Bureau of Labor
and Industnea, and the U S. Department of Labor. Bu ­
reau of Apprenticeship & Training will host "Apprentice­
ship '86,” a focus on your fu tu re , at Clackamas Town
Center, July 2930-31. It will feature over 40 jobrelated ex
hibrtors and non-profit organizations, with a special focus
on women and m in on ti« in the nontradrtional workplace.
There will be many live demonstrations of various trade/
occupations, everything from culinary demonstrations fea
tunng apprentie« from many local restaurants, apprentice
masons constructing a fireplace, to viewing the various
stages of auto-body restoration, and you will have the op­
portunity to talk with consultants and apprentie« about
the over 170 apprenticeship programs currently in Oregon.
The Main Event will take place on Wednesday, July 31,
at 1:30 p.m. near the ice skating arena. This will feature a
skills building competition betw ten a team of 4th and 5th
term celebnti« (made up of famous local politicians, T V
personalities) Each team will build a small structure, given
the same time frame, blueprint, tools, etc. The celebnti«,
all talented individuals, of course, lack the training and
knowledge that carpenter apprentices possess The end re
suit, the completion of the structure, will demonstrate how
that lack of knowledge could affect our environment
