G overnor Vic A tiy a h ’s determ ination
to v eto H B 2001; the divesture bill
introduced by District 16 R epresenta
tive M argaret Garter.
Portland State University's (P SU ’s)
Students A gainst Apartheid and
m em bers from Lewis and Clark and
Reed C ollege anti-apartheid groups
held (he vigil at the state o ffice build
ing.
The Vigil began at 5 p.m . Sunday
and ended with a dem onstration and
a rally at V a m . M onday m orning.
P rofessor and C haplain Jim Stuart
from L ew is and Clark C ollege brief
ly appeared at the vigil, and P S U ’s
Black Studies professor Dr. Candice
G oucher participated in the entire
even t.
In add ition to the vigil, the group
sent A tiyeh a telegram The telegram
read: " 25 bedrolls were unfolded at
P ortland 's Stale O ffic e Building at
5 p .m . Sunday in support o f H B 2001.
W e urge your sign atu re.”
M oreover, the telegram was fo l
low ed up with a teleph one call to the
governor's o ffic e M onday m orning.
Tuesday, July 16, the O regon ian
indirectly qu oted A tiyeh as saying,
" , . .it will be perceived by som e that
I have aban don ed my d eep , lon g

In response to the statem ent, Rep.

Black people d ow n ; it was the state o f
O regon ."
Rep. Carter pledged to continue to
fight for divesture even if it m eans re
introducing the piece o f legislation in
1987.
Several anti-apartheid groups in
P ortland, specifically P S U 's Students
Against A partheid, view the gover
nor’s m o v e as o n e that will enhance
his p osition in the business com m u n
ity.
A tiyeh lias not announced whether
or not he will seek national o ffice or
return to private business when his
term expires.
By vetoing the bill, the governor as
sures that a portion o f O regon ’s pub
lic em ployees funds and som e o f the
state's eight colleges and universities
tuition fees will continue to be in
vested in com p an ies d oin g business
with the w orld's only apartheid sys

F ollow ing M on d ay's dem onstra
tion and rally, the student anti-
apartheid groups decided to continue
their anti-apartheid m ovem ent by
dem onstrating at sp ecific targeted
sites.
N o sites or dates were given but it
was noted that the dem onstrations
would begin within 30 days.
