An open letter to the Blazers
I ’m writing in response io Mr.
Jermgan's comment aboul the lack o f
Hla/et visibility and non-involvement
in our Black community. I realize that
being on a different economic scale
sometimes changes one’ s lifestyle,
but, we all should remember "fro m
where we came.”
Nine o f Ihe 12 Blazers are Black.
How many times do they come to the
Northeast side o f town, other ihan to
cam their pay? I work with young
people every day at Beaumont Middle
Schtxil, where I teach; Grant High
School, where I coach, and Con
cordia College in the summer where I
work for the National Youth Sports
Program, which is free to our kids.
These kids need as much positive re
inforcement as they can gel. Someone
helped you Blazers io gel your posi
tion I know lhai professional aih-

lime, hui remember our kids: First
our schools, our parks. Sign some re
port cards, not just autographs. You
are key role models!
Maurice I ucas did involve himself
wiih our community. He ran clinics,
played lennis and communicated with
the people o f the community. Michael
Harper donated his lime al the NYSP
Camp al Concordia. Fie could have
received pay elsewhere. Herrn G illiam
added his contributions. Fie was very

community! O ur kids look up to
you. If you don’t know who io con-
laci, call Roy Jernigan at the Observ
er; John Phillips at the Skanncr; Tony
Hopson at Jefferson High School or
me al Beaumont Middle School.
This is a cry for help. Do something
for ihe kids who can't a ffo rd $200 to
go io camp Please put back some o f
the things lhai you hase taken out o f
some other commumiy.
Blazers, spend some lime telling
our young people the importance o f
education, the importance o l working
hard and being dedicated. Tell them if
they work hard lhai ihey can he suc
cessful in life, not just athletics. Our
kids need lo have a strong self-image.
They need hope. They need your
help. Brother Blazers. Believe me,
there are a lot o f us who do n all the
time absolutely free. But I can live
with my conscience — can you?
