BO STO N — The Board o f Trus
tees o f the Unitarian Universalis!
Association o f congregations voted
without dissent Sunday, April 2 I, to
sell stocks o f companies which do
one percent or more o f their busi
ness in South Africa, or which do
not adhere to the Sullivan Principles
o f equal treatment for all.
The anti-partheid guideline, effec
tive immediately, provides that such
stocks will be sold within six months,
although the Association can retain
sufficient slock (currently S I,000
worth under Federal regulations) to
"enable shareholder advacacy ac
tivities.”
The Unitarian Universalists in
vestment policy guideline "condemns
the moral and ethical wrongs ex
pressed in the apartheid policies o f the
South African government."
Robert T . Lavender, Financial
Advisor to the Board and a trustee
from Darien, Connecticut, said the
impact on the denomination’s port
folio o f stocks was not fully known
but that it would require the sale of
some holdings.
The association has a long history
o f actions and statements against
apartheid Among its lay leaders who
have spoken out against apartheid
was the late Whitney Young o f the
Urban League.
M ore recently, the association’s
president, the Res Dr. Lugene Pick
ett, was arrested Feb. 2 I, for demon
strating outside the South African
Embassy in Washington,
