Sweet swinging Calvin Peete pul
another notch on his irons Sunday as
he strode o ff the 18th hole at the
Players Club at Sawgrass in Ponte
Verda. Florida Peete won the Tour
nament Players Championship with a
record setting performance o f 14-
under par, 274 total. The victory pul
(162,000 big ones in Calvin’s treasure
chest and gives him $269,585 in earn
ings for the season. That total puts
Calvin in second place on the money
list behind Curtis Strange
Sunday’s round was a thing of
beauty as Calvin held o ff all chal
lenges and kept the pressure on with
some monster putts on the back nine.
His blistering 32 on the backside all
but clinched this prestigious win
against the champions from last season.
Brother Calvin started the day’s
play in a tie for the lead with D .A .
Weibnng and two-time U.S. Open
champion Hale Irwin. Peete set the
tone with a birdie-birdie start and let
the field know that they were in for
an interesting afternoon. From then
on it was just fairways and greens as
the straight hitter from Florida
brought the course to its knees.
When Calvin reached the 12th
hole he decided to pul some distance
between himself and his competition
and promptly birdied the 12th. 13th
and 14th holes. When Peete reached
the 17th, a 140-yard par-3 surrounded
by water, he hit a nine iron stoney,
birdied the hole and split. During
Saturday’s round, Peete hit one that
got wet on the 17th. A routine par
on the final hole broke the course
record, held by Fred Couples, by
3 shots.

It absolutely amazes me that loyalty
to school and community is forever
placed on the shoulders of the student
athletes. When these angry coaches
get a better offer to take their talents
elsewhere, they will not be encum
bered by such things as community
loyalty and transfer rules.
This fuss has come about because
St. Mary's won both the stale basket
ball and volleyball titles with athletes
that transferred from public high
schools in the Metro area. St. M ary’s
officials insist they would not resist
any rule changes. "That would be
fine with us," said l.eann Leaver-
ton, athletic director at St. Mary's
Academy. “ W e've always followed
the rules."

coaching career ahead o f her. That’s
far in the future because there are
some great playing days in her future

kids know that her game was back in

When you play a team that only
misses 6 shots in the game and you
kne by 2 points, there’s no need io
hang your head. That seemed to be
the philosophy that John Thompson
took Monday night as his Hoyas were
stopped in their bid to repeat as
N C A A champions.
In the last four years the Hoyas had
their chances and lost two champion
ships by a total o f three points, and
they won one. If the Wildcats o f Vil-
lanova had played the Celtics and
shot 79 percent from the field, they
could've won the N B A championship.

ing the action, I ’m sure that the Wildcats
could riot have shot such a tomd per
centage from the field I’m whipping a
dead horse and I know it but it will he a
tragedy to see the college game go the
way of the pros.

are quite angry. You won’t believe
what they’re angry about. St. M ary’s
back-to-back basketball champion
ships have the coaches upset because
they leel the Blues are taking advan
tage of the transfer rules for student
athletes.
“ The coaches can rationalize in
their minds that privaie schools have
to recruit, not just athletes but any
body, to stay alive,” Smith said.
But it’s tough to count on a kid for
three years, pul a lot o f time and en
ergy into her, then the kid is gong to a
