Intangibles factor in Coach of the Year contest
Peer pressure is a fact o f basketball
coaching life and plaudits from one's
peers can make it seem worthwhile,
especially to those spotlighted for an
exceptional jo b well done.
That's why selection as Coach o f
the Year is considered the most pres
tigious honor in the hoop profession.
Right now, as the collegiate season
races to its tournament-time climax,
members o f the National Association
o f Basketball Coaches (N A B C ) are
preparing to vote for the one among
them whose 1984-85 direction has
been best.
There's a lot more to be consid
ered than wins and losses, final con
ference standings and the frenetic
gallop towards the final four.
There are the intangible responsi
bilities o f coaching such as helping
young men mature; the development
o f awkward youth to competitive
competence;
keeping
educational
values in proper perspective amid
the roar o f the crowd and the ever-
delicate guidance o f a group o f varied
personalities.
Via their professional pipelines,
coaches know their peers better than
the headline writers, statistical ana
lysts and, sometimes, even the players.
What makes voting fo r this award
so d iffic u lt is that there are always so
many deserving candidates.
This season, more than a dozen
,-oaches from all parts o f the U.S.
lave done outstanding jobs, each
worthy o f a special accolade. Among
hem are Little Looie C arnesecca (St.
lohn's) who boosted his Redmen to
‘'lumber One tanking for the first
ime in 30 years; John Thompson
Georgetown) who molded one o f
he greatest squads in many, many
tears while defending a national
:hampionship; Lefty Driesell (Mary-
and) who won his 500th career de
rision; Dana K irk (Memphis State),
Jilly Tubbs (Oklahoma), Ralph Miller
Oregon State), Dave Bliss (SMU),
lim Valvano (N orth Carolina State),
lobby Crim mins (Georgia Tech) and
Jill Frieder (Michigan).
A ll had sparkling statistical set
ons, yet it may well be that the Coach
if the Year w ill be chosen for the
ntangibles.
Consider what Thompson has done
o transform Patrick Ewing from a
hy, unsure, young giant into an in-
imidator equal to Darth Vader. Or
low carefully K irk polished the raw
kills that Keith Lee brought to Mem-
ihis State or how carefully Tubbs
uided the multi-talented Wayman
isdale. The manner in which Car-
icsccca steered St. John’s through
s rough Big East schedule deserves
onsiderable attention.
Crimmins has hoisted George Tech
om the cellar jto the attic in the rug-
cd A tlantic Coast Conference in
ist four years.
It’s impossible to overlook Okla-
oma's Tubbs and his gossamer touch
f leaching only reasonable restraint
> Tisdale — perhaps the nation's
lost spectacular performer. More
nportantly is the excitement Tubbs
as brought to the Sooners’ style.
