How your body
uses minerals
In my last article, I w rote about
vitamins in general and what consti
tutes an optim um level o f daily in
take The focus o f today’s article
are the needs and uses o f essential
minerals.
M inerals are inorganic substances
I hat are neither plant nor anim al.
Those substances that are essential to
life include calcium, chlorine, ch ro m
ium , copper, cobalt, fluorine, iodine,
iron, magnesium, manganese, m o lyb
denum , nickel, phosphorus, potas
sium, selenium, sodium, sulfur, vana
dium and zinc. Some o f these m iner
gland (goiter), decreased energy,
dry skin and hair and m ental fatigue
is relatively non-toxic and levels o f 50
to 100 mg are easily lolertifed.
U p to 1,000 meg per day produces no
toxicity in individuals with a norm al
thyroid. Iro n is necessary for the
form atio n o f hem oglobin so its d e fi
T w o minerals that are becoming
more generally accepted as im portant
and often are inadequate in the diet
are selenium and chrom ium . W h ile
ciency conditions include weakness,
fatigue and anem ia. Iro n is probably
less often needed as a supplement
than is generally assumed by public
neither o f these have an R D A , their
roles in hum an function and (heir
com m on low levels in soil and there
include insulin production, prostatic
secretions, im m une activity, wound
healing, digestion, and inflam m atio n
(arthritis). T he R D A is I5 mg but zinc
als are so abundant in nature (fo o d )
that there are no R D A 's (recom m end
ed daily allowances) for them. These
include chlorine (found in salt), cobalt
(found in red meat, fish and dairy),
(protein) and vanadium (*ea foods).
These minerals with no R D A ’s rarely
exhibit deficiency symptoms with
cobalt intake in strict vegetarians
being the one m ajo r exception. D i
gestive problems may result in in
adequate absorption o f ihese minerals
and therefore result in deficiency
symptoms.
The minerals that are designated
with federal R D A ’s are: calcium Kitri-

phosphorus 800 mg, sodium 3-7 g,

Copper has many functions in the
human system. Its role in red blood
cell form ation leads to its deficiency
symptom o f general weakness. It
also plays an im portant role in im
mune function and healing o f skin
sores. T he R D A o f 2 mg should be an
adequate level o f supplementation (40
mg for extended time may be toxic in
some individuals). Iodine has a p ri
mary function in the production o f
the thyroid hormone. Iodine deficiency
