Over 300 national and regional re­
ligious leaders o f all faiths today released
an Open Letter to Congress calling for
a new U.S. policy toward the Republic
o f South A fric a . C a llin g the Reagan
policy o f constructive engagement “ dis­
astrous fro m a m o ral point o f view ”
and citing the recent uprisings in South
Africa and the dramatic growth o f the
Free South A fric a M o v e m e n t in the
U.S. as evidence of public dissatisfaction
w ith current policy, the leaders called
on the Congress to “ forge a fresh ap ­
proach to South A fric a ,” including the
impiNtM m o f economic sanctions.

Dr Williams has served on the Board of Directors of the Portland

! Steering Committee on the War on Poverty.
