M inority students
visit P.S.U.

Over 200 minority high school slu-
ilcnis from around Oregon visited
Portland State University last week
The third annual "on campus field
trip " enabled the students *o get a
head start on education and career
planning, and to meet each otner and
have some fun.
"W e invite sophomores, juniors
and seniors from all over the state,”
said PSU affirmative action admis
sion counselor M aria Alanis. His
panic, Black, American Indian and
Asian students came from Portland,
Salem, W ixxlburn and small com
munities like Gervais, said Alanis,
who is responsible for minorily stu
dent outreach,
The visiting high schoolers listened
to deans outline the various PSU
departmental programs, took a tour
of the cmapus and were entertained
by a jazz band after lunch. Elaine A.
Ejigelstad, an American Indian and
attorney who graduated from PSU,
gave a morale building talk on how to
make it in the high power urban edu
cation environment.
The PSU affirmative action office
has taken the lead among state institu
tions of higher education in offering
the visitations, said Alanis.
PSU offers classes, degree pro
grams, and foreign study opportuni
ties of interest to minority students.
In addition, advising, financial plan
ning and aid, tutoring and other sup
port is available to help them stay in
school once they enter, she said.
One of the visitors was a young
Hispanic woman from a low-income
family in Gervais who plans to study
business administrtion and become
an accountant. "She wants to be
somebody some day,” said Alanis.
"She wants to prove to everyone else,
especially her parents, that she can do
it; that is, succeed in higher education "

dents come from family backgrounds
with no higher education cxpcnencc,
and where college is not a viable option.
They don’t get the preparation or atten
tion they need, he said, and are often
channeled for failure by an insensitive
educational system.
Minority students are "holding
steady" at PSU, he said, but their fu
ture is clouded by more stringent
entry requirements and looming budget
cuts, families below the poverty level
will be hit hard by the changes, which
he sees as a trend toward “ creating an
elitist educational system," he said

opens dental

the first patient at Baloney Joe's new
dental clinic last week.
" M y heart is racing and I ’m very
scared," said Green, who will be in
charge o f the clinic's operation
Dr. Ben Curtis had just given her a
shot o f Novacaine and was preparing
to fill a cavity. Curtis, president o f the
Oregon Dental Association, did the
groundwork to get the clinic open.
He organized a pool o f 35 dentists
who will volunteer at the clinic, which
was designed to meet the dental care
needs o f the homeless poor.
Dr. Hank Van Hassel, Dean o f the
School o f Dentistry, University of
Oregon Health Science University,
said that dental students will also be
helping at the clinic.
About $16,(XX) worth o f equipment
for a complete dental office was do
nated by Adec, Inc., of Newberg. " I f
this is a grand opening, it's also a
grand expeience for us,” said Ken
Austin, president of Ailek
Curtis said other clinics for low
income people in Portland were "w ay
over demand." and dental care for
the homeless was being neglected.
Michael Stoops, director of Baloney
Joe's, said that some clinics have
long waiting lists and require a phone
number and small donation which
makes it hard for the homeless to get
their teeth taken care of.
Stoops said people are coming
into Baloney Joe’s in severe pain
with toothaches. Others have lost their
dentures. "They're neglecting their
dental care because they can't afford
it." he said
With the new dental clinic, he said,
“ W e 'll.b e able to monitor medical
and dental health a heck of a lot-bet
ter " Baloney Joe's also operates a
medical clinic.
The dental clinic will open Monday,
Wednesday and Enday afternoons at
Bakwiey Joe's, 313 E Burnside St.
