Pioneer Clubs are a once-a-week
club activity for grade school children,
on Thursdays, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.,

Pioneer Clubs combine games, mu­
sic, crafts, field trips, and seasonal
celebrations, with an interesting Bible-
learning program. There i s a program
o f awards and honors lhat the chil­
dren can participate in, similar to those
in Scouts or Campfire,
Church bus transportation from the
child's school to the church, and hack
to the school after club, is possible if
there arc enough participants from a
given school. Vernon School is being

Presbyterians raise $2 million
for African hunger relief
M ore than $2 m illio n to relieve
hunger in Ethiopia and other African
countries has been collected in the
Presbyterian Church (U S. A .) since
November, according to officials in the
3.1 million member denomination.
The money has been collected
through the Mission Treasury Service
in the New York office of the denomi­
nation and through the Hunger Fund
and Crisis Fund administered in the
Atlanta office.
Between N ov. 15. when the firs,
checks began arriving in the New York
office, and Jan. 11. S I,1 89.400.26 has
been collected and disbursed through
Mission Treasury Service in the denom­
ination's Support Agency, according to
Royal Denny, associate manager, Mis­
sion Treasury Service.
O f that total, SI,023,883.32 has been
collected in the New York office for
emergency disaster relief for Ethiopia.
AU o f that money has been turned over
to the W orld Relief, Emergency and
Resettlement Services o ffic e in the
denom ination's Program Agency,
which transfers the money to Church
World Service. Denny said.
The remainder o f the money col­
lected through the New York office
was designated for either Ethiopia —
$70,843.66 — or Africa in general —
$94,673.23. That money is ad m in ­
istered through the Presbyterian H un­
ger Program, a Program Agency e f­
fort conducted with the Presbyterian
Hunger Program o f the General As­
sembly Mission Board in Atlanta.

Ethiopia and Africa in general during
November and December amounts to
"in excess o f $8 0 0 ,0 0 0 ," according
to Jack Bramcr, treasurer o f the Gen­
eral Assembly Mission Board.

preschool is located at 620 NE Clacka
mas, jus, west of the Lloyd Center
The center, a non profit organize
tion, is operated by Temple Baptist
Church, and occupies space in a new
building constructed last year espe
cially for the child care center
"Our congregation really fel, there
was a need for quality, safe, afford
able child care, no, only for those
who live in the area bu, work nearby
as w e ll," said Lloyd Rekstad. who
heads the church's Day Care Com
mrttee.
"Sonbeam Day Care Center is open
to all children regardless of their reli
gion or race W e don', intend this to
be only for our co n greg ation ," he
said

Fund, 341 Ponce de Leon Ave., N E,
Atlanta, G A 30365.
Contributions for Ethiopia should

Relief," according to the alert. "O ne
hundred percent o f designated funds

alert noted.
