" M a s te r H aro ld " is H ally, a w h ite South A frican teenager and
"the boys" are W illis and Sam . w h o Black men w ho w o rk for his
family at St George's Park Tea Room in Port Elizabeth The year is
1960 Hally, back from school, visits his "second fam ily" at the Tea
Room and the three m en share c o m m o n m em ories H ally learns
that his crippled, alcoholic father is to be released from the hospital
and w ill be hom e again w here his prsssnes is painfully disruptive
Suddenly angry and afraid. Hally turns viciously on Willie end Sam
In the play's climax each character’s anguish is illuminated in a blaze
of em otional devastation and w e are made to understand h ow the
underlying realities of place and tim e can coma to dom inate w hat
we do and who w e are
Rick Jones has perform ed in over 30 productions in Los Angeles,
Seattle end Portland. He received "W illam ette W eek" W illie A w ard
nominations for his portrayal of "Ice" in Storefront Theatre's "Short
Eyes" and for his role as Randall in the Wilson Center production of
"Slow Dance on the Killing Ground." the latter also winning an act
ing award from KKSN radio Rick shared the stage w ith Tony Award
winner Virginia Capers in the Obie A w ard winning "Zoo M en and
the Sign." which played to sell out audiences in Philadelphia
A. Lee Wilson (Willie) trained professionally at the Artist's Codec
tive Performing Arts School in Hartford. Conn He worked in several
off Broadway productions before moving to Portland in 1979 He has
performed in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" end "Another Part
of the Forest." both at Portland Civic Theater He appeared in "Stream
era" at Storefront Theater and "O f M ice and M en" at Central Oregon
Com m unity College Ha has perform ed in tw o plays by Athol Fugard
— " S iz w e Bansi is D ead " (co starring Rick Jonas) and "A Lesson
From Aloes” at Artist's Reportory Theater
Daniel Hays (Hally), is a senior at the University of Portland "M as
ter Harold and the Boys" will be his 25th production He recently ap
paarad as a guest artist in M adison High School's pro du ctio n of
"They're Playing Our Song." for the state Thespian conference This
year he was nom inated for an Irene Ryan A w ard for his role as Sir
A ndrew A quachaak in Shakespeare's "T w e lfth Night "
