OBITUARY: Ronnie Williams
Ronnie W illia m s died F rid a y , Jan­
uary 25, 1985, o f heart failu re . R o n ­
nie was b o rn in B irm in g h a m , A l a ­
b am a , in 1946. H e was a le a d e r in
the A la b a m a Black P a n th e r M o v e ­
m e n t, w hich o rg an ize d c o m m u n ity
self-defense against K ian violence, a
breakfast fo r children p ro g ram , and
d istributed the Black P a n th e r news­
p aper. In 1973 he cam e to O re g o n ,
fleeing the Alabam a "justice system”
which was attem pting to elim inate all
leaders o f the A la b a m a Black L ib e r­
ation Fro nt. Ronnie was wounded in
a “ s h o o t-in " where 35 deputies had
su rro u n d ed a house s u b je c tin g the
occupants to a tw o-m inute barrage o f
fire. H e then was convicted o f assault­
ing a p olice o ffic e r by an a ll-w h ite
ju ry , although not one shot had been
fired from within the house the police
had surrounded. H e w on his extradi-
lion hearing in O regon when G o v e r­
nor M c C a ll refused to extradite R o n ­
nie back to A labam a.
For 13 years R onnie lived in P o rt­
land w here he con tin ued w o rk in g in
Ihe c o m m u n ity here. H e is survived
by his daughter Jacqueline W illiam s
A h oo k o f his p o e try w ill be f o r t h ­
c o m in g . R o n n ie was an in s p ira tio n
and continues to be and that is why a
m em orial gathering is being held. A ll
frie n d s in the c o m m u n ity w h o are
seeking peace as R o n n ie d id are
welcome.
T h e m e m o ria l w ill be held on F r i­
day, February I , at King Center A u d i­
torium , 4850 N E 7th at 6 p .m . Funds
to help tra n s p o rt his fa m ily to the
fu n e ra l in A la b a m a w ill be accepted
at the m e m o ria l. A n y excess fun ds
will go tow ard the Free South A fric a
fund.
