The P IL got back in to the swing
after the Christmas break and Tues
day marked the resumption of league
play. Last year the Benson Techmen
came o f f o f th eir Xm as vacation
and were blown away by the Demo
crats and knocked out o f the Class
A A A state to u rn a m en t. Tech f o r
w ard A a ro n Bell played w ith that
memory and insured his mates against
a repeat o f that pivotal game. Benson
was on the big end o f a 80-68 romp.
Jefferson came out w ith a tight
zone defense designed to force pe
rimeter shooting from the Techmen
and for a time it worked. W ith Bell
and C o u rtn ey Cellestine popping
those outside jumpers the Techmen
took the first q uarter 18-13. Head
Coach Bobby H arris had his squad
ready and at the 7:08 m ark o f the
second quarter forw ard Tony Broa
dus hit tw o free throws to get Jef
ferson even at 18-18. Benson got se
rious from here and took o ff. Coach
Dick G ray put his starters back into
the game and the Techmen went on a
15-6 scoring spree and look the lead
at halftime 36-26.
When Benson hit the floor in the
third quarter their guards were geared
to getting the ball inside to Bell and
Cellestine and Jefferson was on the
ropes fro m that point on. A fast
break layup by Chris Johnson and a
baseline jumper by Bell swelled Ben
son’s lead to 40-26. The Democrats
were taken out o f their offensive
game plan and were down 53-36 going
into the last q uarter. I f you are fa
miliar with Coach Harris, you know
that his team never quits and they
didn't. The Democrats fought gamely
but there was just too much Aaron
Bell and Courtney Cellestine. Bell led
the scoring for Benson with 21 points
and he hauled down a bushel o f re
bounds. Cellestine played a flawless
game and scored 15 points. J e ffe r
son’ s top scorer was Jerrell Spires
with 13.
I am a Bobby Harris fan and when
these two teams meet again, on Feb
ru ary 8th at Benson, d o n ’ t be sur
prised if the Democrats can come up
with a form ula to counter Benson's
high powered offense.

W est, G r a n t’ s M r . Inside, helped
keep the defense honest by chipping
in for 15. The win kept the defend
ing champs in the driver's seat atop
the P IL race with a 4-0 record. John
Power led the scoring for M adison
w ith 16 points in their win over
F ra n k lin . G a ry Rubin hit for 23
points against Wilson. Andre George
lit up the scoreboard fo r 41 and
Roosevelt drubbed Cleveland. Russ
Persaud tallied 29 lor Cleveland but
it wasn't enough.
Girls capsule
Lynn Fuller scored 17 points for
Franklin but Diana DeYoung hit 18
to pace Madison in a 2-point game.
Lincoln jum ped on the G ran t G en
erals and was led by Ann W est’s 21.
The loss was the first fo r G ran t in
league play M a rio D ishm an and
Amam Housen had 10 apiece for the
G enerals. It was a clean sweep for
Benson over Jefferson. Shannon
Farrell had 12 for Benson and Rachel
W ickcnheiser had 12 fo r Je ff. Jill
W eisner, C levelan d 's scoring m a
chine, burned Roosevelt for 28 points.
Weisner is the premier player in the
league this year and her scoring re
flects that fact emphatically. Wilson
rem ained undefeated and Julie
Scherrs' 12 points over Marshall led
the scoring. Rosalyn Hortsch hit 14
for Marshall

G ran t got good balanced scoring
and massacred C leveland 105-68.
As usual, T o n y Ross was the ring
leader, popping 20 points from his
guard position, and M ark West once
again worked the inside for 19. Sean
M itch ell tallie d 21 fo r C leveland.
W ilson held onto their share o f the
league lead and remained undefeated
for the season by pasteing Jeff. Gary
Rubin took scoring honors w ith 22
points and the Democrats were led by
A nthony B u tle r’ s 10. A a ro n Bell
and C ourtney Cellestine continued
to be the heard of the Techmen, scor
ing 19 and 16 points respectively,
in Benson’s win over Madison. Madi
son was led by Kevin Goldsby with 15
and John Powers' 14 Andre George
got away again and posted 43 points
as Roosevelt eased by Marshall. A n
dre seems to have gotten his basket
ball legs now so watch out for some
big figures by this young man. The
P IL race is siarting to shape up now
and G ra n t, W ilso n , Rooseveli and
Benson w o n ’ t be taking prisoners
from this point on.
Girl* capsule
Wilson holds down the lop spot in
the l eague at 5-0 and 7-0 for the sea
son. The girls from Wilson went into
Friday’s play intent on keeping (hat
record intact and did. Helen Meisen-
heidcr led the way with 14 points in
the win over Jefferson. Rachel Taylor
led the Dem ocrats w ith 10 points.
Marshall put the clamps on Roosevelt
and held them to a mere 26 points.
Rosalyn Hortsch scored 14 and M a r
shall sits in a tie with Grant and M adi
son at 4-1. G rant rebounded from a
tough loss Tuesday and took things
out on Cleveland. Amani Houson got
lough for 16 points and B. Smith
followed w ith 14. That tough G en

crats this time out, Jeff Key had 21
for M arshall and Eural Andrews 17
for Jefferson. G ary Rubins’ 26 were
enough for W ilson over C leveland.
The entire Cleveland team could only
score 8 points more than Gary.

season and continued to play good

Jenkins shaked and baked her way

single trip as the girls pounced on

parts. Michelle Fuller led the Franklin
attack with 21 markers. Lisa Hering
