Dr. King and Rev. Ralph Abernathy visit W est Berlin at the invita
tion of Mayor Willy Brandt. King has an audience with Pope Paul VI
at the Vatican.
James Meredith makes first attempt to enroll at the University of
Mississippi. H e is enrolled by order o f the Suprem e Court and
escorted onto the campus by U .S . marshals on October 1st.

The March on Washington is held. Dr. King delivers his "I Have
a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

King receives the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway.

Riots occur in Harlem, N ew Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Selma. Alabama. 1966 Marcher* were savagely beaten after croaa-
ing the Pettis Bridge on their march from Selma to Montgomery. The
march continued, culminating in a triumphant rally on the steps of the
State Capitol.
