Pastoral letter discussed
A public fo ru m on the United
Slates Catholic Bishops* first draft of
the pastoral letter “ Catholic Social
Teaching and the U.S. Economy" will
be held on January 16, 1985 at the
University o f Portland, 5000 N. W il­
lamette Blvd. Beginning at 7:30 p.m.
in H ow ard H a ll, the forum is being
co-sponsored by the Oregon Catholic
Conference and the University’s Peace
Studies Program
The fo ru m w ill allow O reg o n ’s
bishops to receive comments and sug­
gestions on the first draft o f the eco­
nomics pastoral from a panel of speak­
ers and the public at large A panel of
four speakers will present reactions to
(he pastoral fro m the perspectives
o f poverty and social policy, labor,
business and economics

J. Boys, S.S.S., Assistant Professor of
Sociology and Director o f the Social
Service Program. University o f Port­
land; M r. Irv Fletcher, President,
Oregon A F L -C IO ; M r Ivo Bauman,
President, M t. Angel Telephone Com­
pany and C h airm an o f the Board,
U.S. Inlelco Networks, inc.; and Dr.
James W Seal, Dean of the School of
Business Adm inistration, University
of Portland.
The public forum is similar to one
held March 7, 1983 to discuss the war
peace Pastoral letter of the U.S. Bish
ops, "The Challenge of Peace: God's
Promise and O ur Response." Arch
bishop Cornelius M Power o f the
Archdiocese ol Portland in Oregon
(Western Oregon) and Bishop Ihomas
J. Connolly o f the Diocese of Baker
(Eastern Oregon) extend an invitation
to all the people of Oregon to partici­
pate in the forum and the discussion ol
the economics pastoral
" T h e U .S . economy and public
policy decisions have m oral dim en ­
sions, and the bishops want to encour­
age reflection, discussion, and action
on these issues," said Archbishop

task forces to discuss the pastoral and
fixward comments to the Bishops I he

on the first draft of the pastoral letter

Weakland, OSB ol the Archdiocese ol
Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The purpose ol a pastoral letter is
to provide moral and spiritual direc­
tion on im portant topics. W hile a
pastoral letter is directed p rim arily
to Catholics as a guide in their daily
lives, the Bishops also anticipate that

in the Iarnily, values clarification, and
coping with divorce, separation or
widow hood.
Coping with Alcohol on Saturday,
January 19, is designed to provide
information on recognizing the symp­
toms of alcoholism, locating resources
to help combat the disease, and dealing
with the problem in the home, school
or work setting.
Spotlighting Values on Februaty 9
provides a lixtk at beliefs, attitudes and
values that shape individual decisions
and actions. Students w ill check to
see if their behaviors match their staled
beliefs, evaluate the consequences of
their choices and explore the processes
that lead to the development of per­
sonalized values.
Each of the workshops runs from 9
a.m . to 5 p.m . at the Cascade C am ­
pus, 705 N. Killingsworth. Tuition on
each is $21 fix one hour college credit.
