I he Breakers are coming to P o rt­
land and I ’ m hoping fo r a new look
and a few changes, the changes that
I want to see are not just restricted
to the p la y in g fie ld , e ith e r. In the
N F L there is only one Black q u a r­
terback and no Black head coaches.
M a jo r league baseball has no Black

cbaches. These sp o rting m o n o p o ­
lies have one glaring similarity: they
do not hire people o f color in m an­
agem ent positions. A l D a vis, L .A .
raider owner has the only H ispanic
coach in all three m a jo r sports.
Break the m old, Breakers, and put
some people o f c o lo r in yo u r new
offices.
Since Jackie Robinson forged the
way in 1947, m a jo r league sports
have been dom inated by players o f
c o lo r, but no progress has been
made in front office positions. Take
a loo k at the T r a ilB la z e r press
guide and tell me this is 1984. W ally
Scales is the only representative o f a
m in o rity race listed under ad m in is­
tra tio n . L a rry Steels and Dave
T w a rd z ik , fo rm e rly m arginal p lay­
ers at best, are in fro n t o ffic e p o ­
sitions on the Blazer staff. Remem­
ber fo rm e r Blazers L lo y d N e a l,
LaRue M a rtin . Leroy Ellis and Greg
S m ith ? These players all re tired
rig h t here in P o rtla n d and lo o ked
for w o r k .. . . enough said!
W h ite college coaches come into

head coaching positions fro m f o r ­
mer players both black and w hite.
Jim L yn am came in to the league a
few years ago on Jack Ram sey's
co a tta ils and in no tim e at a ll he
replaced Paul Silas as head coach o f
the Clippers. Lynam could not read
the book that Silas can w rite about
p ro b as k e tb a ll. K .C . Jones and
John Thom pson o f G eorgetown U .
have proven that form er Black play­
ers can coach and w in . B illy C u n ­
n in g ham o f the 76ers got his shot
w ith no p rio r experience in coach­
ing, didn’ t he?
F o rm e r T ra ilB la z e r assistant
coach Jack M cK in n ey retired fro m
coaching yesterday and was prom pt­
ly replaced by P h il Jo h nson , w ho
has been an assistant coach for the
U ta h J a zz. Johnson was fire d as
the Kansas C ity Kings coach during
the 1977-1978 season but now he
goes back with a three-year contract
to replace M cK in n ey. B urnout was
cited as the reason fo r M cK in n ey's
re tire m e n t. T ry in g to teach p o in t
guard and pow er fo rw a rd to co m ­
plete b a ll players w o u ld burn out
any college coach. A n d th at's what
M c K in n e y was, a college coach.
