Jeff High track star keeps Olympic torch
John Frazier, Jr., the runner who
carried the Olympic torch in a leg of
the recent nationw ide relay to L o t
Angeles, was presented with the torch
by Oran B Robertson, Chairman of
the Board and C h ie f Executive O f
ficer at Fred Meyer.
F ra z ie r, IB, a I984 graduate of
Je fferso n H ig h School, said the
presentation of the torch came as a
pleasant surprise. “ People kept
asking me if I'd get to keep it. and I
said I d id n 't know. I was surprised
...when they said I could," he said.

embellishes that spirit."
For a young runner, Frazier has
an impressive history of running ac
complishments As a member of the
Jefferson track team, he set school
records in the 100 and 200 meters.
Frazier was the 1983 Oregon State
C h a m p io n in the 100-m eter, 200
meter, and mile relay events.
Last July, Frazier ran in the 100-
meter and 200-ineter events at the
Junior Olym pic Games. He says of
the experience. " I t was great getting
to gether and com peting w ith the
best people from all over the coun
t r y .” Frazier look third in the 100
meters.
His accomplishments were noted
by Fred Meyer officials, who selec
ted him to be the runner fo r the
company-sponsored Olympic torch.
O f his selection, Frazier recalls, " I
was shocked I'd just heard about
the relay, and a few days later, they
asked me to do it. I was surprised,
und really proud.”

Oregon were greeted hy thousands
o f cheering supporters. Said
F razier, “ I tell like I was actually
taking part in the O ly m p ic s ." He
may have his chance to do just th a i.

enter the University of O-egon on a
track
scholarship.
He
says
hopefully. " M v last year of college
w ill be an O ly m p ic year ...a n d I
hope Io make it there."
Trail Blazers sign
two new rookies
The Portland Trail Blazers signed
two rookies to 1984 85 contracts on
M onday One is Steve ( oiler, 22. a
6 'J ” guard Irom New Mexico State
d rafte d this year as the 33rd selec
tion in the second round.
The other is Tom Schclller, 29, a
6 ' 11" center Irom Purdue, who has
played the last seven seasons in
Europe.
No contract details were revealed.
As a senior at New Mexico Stale

games, led his club in scoring with

any teammate) and in steals with 38.

Scheffler was drafted hy Indiana
in the sixth round but already had
arranged to play in Furope.
