Hasan seeks championship

The results o f these team trials in
June w ill d eterm in e w ho w ill jo in
the U .S. team to compete in the Pan
Am erican com petition this N o vem ­
ber in South America.
“ I w ant to e n lig h te n the c o m ­
munity to the young people we have
here aspiring to higher goals. I am
asking your s u p p o rt," H asan a d ­
ded.
For the next three months, Hasan
and M u h a m m a d are p la n n in g
p ro gram s to g en era te the c a p ita l
necessary for the trip.

The public perceives K a ra te and
Tae Kwon D o as physical but both
the teacher and the student say it is
all mental. " Y o u learn how to con­
trol the mind so you can control the
body. In the West, the discipline has
becom e physical and it gets aw ay
fro m the s p ir it u a l," H a sa n c o n ­
tinued,
M uham m ad called Hasan a good

looked at himself and found his own
potential. He not only fights well in
the rin g , he fig h ts the n eg ative
things which may hinder h im ."
M u h a m m a d added, " O u r m ain
goal is not to overwork and to m ain­
tain a positive attitude by practicing
certain principles; either Y in /Y a n g ,
cause and e ffe c t or b alan ce . Y o u
have to know when to go high, low,
fast or slow . . .kn o w when to get
lig h t or heavy w hile w atch ing the
center line and developing an angle
o f a tta c k ."
B oth said Tae K w o n D o is not
used so much to defend yourself as
to undergo s p iritu a l g ro w th w hile
stu d ying it . Both teacher and
student practice Islam and call their
religion " a fo un dation ."
"D is c ip lin e , dedication and self-
co n tro l are principles I'v e learned
under M u h a m m a d . H e has taught
us that once we start something, to

Hasan is a w ell-rounded athlete
w ith a history o f playing fo o tb a ll,
basketball and running track. His
achievements and awards in M artial
Arts are as long as a computer print­
out. H e is ranked number Five in the
N o rth w e s t
region

fledgling businesses, management
classes for the owners, and access to
other pertinent college resources.

vestigated about a dozen other in ­
cubator concepts across the nation.

Business statistics show that 50-80

businesses exist in the P C C fiv e -
county district.
" T h e concept behind d e v e lo p ­
ment centers is to provide a protec­
ted e n v iro n m e n t the firs t few
years.” Dixon explained.

Hasan scored a first round K n o ck­
o u t over a C a lif o r n ia n in a k ic k ­
boxing bout. But a lack o f finances
has lim ite d his to u rn a m e n t p a r ­
ticipation.
H e said, " U . S . ath letes are
strong, but we need more financial
su p po rt. It is hard to raise m oney
and compete n atio n ally."
The lack o f finances w ill not im ­
pede his progress as he draws upon
the resources fro m w ith in and
w ith o u t to represent A lb in a this
summer. " I want to be an example
for young people, if not in M a rtia l
A rts , then in business. W e need
those types o f positive influences in
our co m m un ity."
H a s a n , 26, has a B a ch elo r o f
Science Degree in Business A d ­
m in is tra tio n and w orks as an in ­
surance claim s adjuster. A second
degree black belt, he is the father of
three sons and his wife Felicia is also
a disciple o f this discipline. H e asks
the community to support him in his

a book about his personal experien­
ces as a 12-year old boy w ith
cerebral palsy and how he did door-
to-door selling.

fin, illustrated the book and the two
subsequently decided they should
open a business. F o r the past tw o
years they have o p e rate d the
business out o f th e ir hom e in
southeast P o rtla n d by p ro v id in g
word processing, computer services
and printing.
F o r the expanded business, the

ghost w riting, resumes, photocopy­
ing, letters and mailing label services.

D ixon is still taking applications
for other occupants. T o be accep­
ted, ap p licants need to show they
have a viable idea w ith a potential
for growth. North Portland residents,
w om en and m in o ritie s w ill be
given p refe re n c e, acco rd in g to
Dixon.
