tedly carried 200 nuclear warheads
to the Trident base.

Bangor. W ashington, only in P o rt
land was the train stopped.

In addition to the evidence o f will
and c o m m itm e n t o f the d e m o n
strators, the protest dem onstrated
the ineptness o f the C ity p olice.

ments. Their number grew to about
50, w ith six horses. T h e n the
Oregon State Police marched up in
riot helmets, armed with batons. A
T ri-M e t bus was called to carry the
protesters to ja il. It did not arrive
but a school bus did. Finally, the jail
bus a rriv e d and the arrests could
begin. In the m e a n tim e , the
protesters were singing, " W e Shall
Overcome” .
A t 3:38 p .m ., about 216 hours a f
ter its unplanned stop, the " D e a th
T r a i n " m oved o n — its w h ite c a rs
tabled " P e a c e N o w " , " P e a c e is
L ife ” .

Health Care Program out o f its con
cern fo r the p u b lic ’ s sa fety . T w o
medical offices, two administrative
offices, and an education and con
ference center comprise the Edgar
F. Kaiser Health Center, located on
both sides o f Interstate Avenue, ad
jacent to Overlook Park.

Center East and the specially care

professionals.
C o u n ty S en io r C enters w ill
receive screening services rotating to
a different center each week. Under
the p ro gram , seniors p articip atin g
in the screening w ill receive a basic-
health assessment. Com ponents o f
this assessment w ill include medical
h is to ry , h e ig h t, w e ig h t, v is io n ,
b lo o d pressure, b lo o d tests, and
d en tal checks. N u tr itio n a l c o u n
seling and referrals to co m m un ity
resources and health professionals
will also be available to seniors.
In ad d itio n, foot care evaluation
and in s tru c tio n w ill be done by a
registered nurse. A screening test for
id e n tify in g m e n ta l stress a n d /o r
depression w ill be conducted fo r
those seniors who desire it. Special
screens for glaucoma, breast cancer,
h earing and b rea th in g w ill be
available periodically at each o f the

centers.
Supervised nursing students from
P o rtlan d C o m m u n ity College w ill
p ro vide assistance w ith the health
screens. O ther volunteers and p a r
ticip a n ts include V N A and senior
volunteers from each o f the centers.
M an y employees o f M etro p o litan ’s
m em ber hospitals are also v o lu n
teering during their time o ff.
At
the conclusion
o f the
screening, clients w ill be counseled
regarding ‘«he findings and referred
to th eir own personal physician if
they have one. Those w ith o ut, w ill
be referred to a physician an d /o r to
c o m m u n ity
resources as a p
propriate. A ll of the findings will be
kept confidential.
