In keeping with the Les Femmes’
tradition o f utilizing former debu
tantes and cavaliers wherever possi
ble, the 1983 debutantes and cava
liers were presented by Miss M aria

butante/Cavalier Ball held Decem
ber 23. 1983 at the Red Lion Inn,
Jantzen Beach.
Those in attendance applauded
the seven debutantes who were stun
ning in white bouffant gowns and
tiaras and the five cavaliers who
were smashing in white tuxedos with
white top hats and canes. The color
scheme o f blue and white was car-
ied out by the escorts o f the debu
tantes who wore blue cummer
bunds, bow tics and carnations, and
the young ladies who accompanied
the cavaliers, all o f whom were

acter Spence in the G ary Coleman
cartoon series.

the chill o f Christmas, Calvin Ms-
son had to leave his fam ily early to
run down to L .A . for a screen test.
Since 1979 Mason has been gath
ering an impressive list o f credits in
modeling, voice-overs and T .V . act
ing. Mason has come a long way
from his roots at Vancouver Avenue
Baptist Church. His big-time T .V .
role is March 3rd on N B C ’s Dtff'rent
Strokes. His co-star will be Janet
Jackson (Michael's sister).
Mason started dancing at a local
club; his act later developed into a
part in a local T .V . show called
" W e ’re O n ." He was a participant
on Dance Fever and in 1981 Mason
became Seattle’s Model o f the Year.
"1 was the best and 1 wanted to
win. I had a dynamic way o f w ork
ing the runway and it paid o f f ."
Tom Higgins, director o f Graham
and Higains Fashion Agency, said
Mason was the first Black male to
have won. " A t one point in the
competition Calvin got a standing
ovation.”
