Sweaters designed for warmth
by Cora Smith
Sweaters have paid their dues leav
ing the casual arena and going
straight to the office. Softness and
texture are a statement of success.
The newest blend, that o f silk or the
imitation of nylon and acrylic have
been
highlighted
this
season.
Angora, back again this season, has
star status. Black, white and bold
colors are favorites. However, make
sure the person seated nearest you
loves you.
Remember, caring for this sweat
er requires skill. Never wash an an
gora sweater but hang outdoors sev
eral hours for airing or place inside
a plastic bag and put into deep
freezer to keep hair flu ffy and new.
Sweaters created for the adventure
some will allow for that special feel
ing 100 percent cashmere or one of
its many blends. Beware of the na
tural knits: they allure a special
creature.
Mothproofing
permits
longevity, drycleaning and sizing is
a must. Some will appreciate the
clean aroma o f the washer and dry
er, but reading the instructions is
definitely in order Place on a rack
or area for flat drying, backed with
a towel, pulling and tucking to place
sweater into original shape.
For the fun o f it, to the serious
ness o f it all, sweater buying—quan
tity and quality—depends on your
budget. The source will vary, be it
the boutiques o f Rodeo Drive, Guc
ci or Yves Saint Laurent; Oregon's
own Pendleton Woolen Mills; or
perhaps the homegrown touches of
a friend's knitting needles. Find an
A man'» impression of a sweater
usually pertains to the contents
within, the right proportion and the
dimensions are the pleasant effects
befitting his eye. But the bare truth
to a woman's impressions, a sweater
will bring out your best effects,
however the chilly winds and
weather o f the Northwest, and
create a design o f warmth.
The indispensable sweater, dating
back to the beginning of time, up
dated and still stabil/es the natural
needs and force o f the original ori
gin o f wool. From knit and purl—
the chain stitch— to the ultimate
cable stitch, it has endured many
centuries, but in today's swirl of
fashions it has its definite iron clad
position. It is not a relic of the past
but truly an institution in today’s
fashion world.
Sweaters are the key fashion look
o f the season— gearing up for all oc
casions. The wrap look is shown
featured for the chilly snow peaks of
Mount H o o d — layering for sweater
dressing, perfect ski wear, capped
heads with texture and color in
keeping with the '80s couture head.
The sophistication o f blending tex
tures allows every fantasy to be en
visioned.
Flat knits supporting favorite
classic pullovers teamed with male.
For the avante-garde, a signature,
initials or name are a must. Howev
er, the excitement o f the various
vests long and short, sleeveless to
the bold dolman, coat dressing to
jackets are definitely in order.
