"Fam ilies

from
Hom e Program." is alive and
doing well for the 13th year,
Dr. Thomas Odoo, president o f
University o f Portland.
D r. Odoo welcomed F A H guests
a t a Sunday noon brunch in the U n i
versity o f Portland Terrace Room.
Presiding with D r. Odoo was Dr.
Harold Wesby, vice-president o f the
university. Both men gave credit to
Vernon Chatman for originating the
idea of establishing a local family
support group for athletes joining
basketball an d /o r football teams on
the U P campus. " I want to thank all
■ he fine people in this program who
have made the program so highly
successful,” said D r. Odoo. " I am
amazed and gratified that so many
families have opened their homes
and offered their time and talents so
that others may grow and adjust to
the university.
" I f students are happy and com
fortable in their settings, they can
study effectively (whigh is the
primary purpose o f the university)
and perform well on the court and
on the football field, thereby grow
ing into responsible and capable
people.” D r O doo said.
D r. Wesby pointed out that
Chatman has worked "tiraiatsly" in
coordinating the efforts o f the uni
versity faculty and staff with that o f
the Portland Urban League. "T h e
says
Urban League does the 'outreach*
o f the program ,” Wesby said. " W e
have never had an incidence o f
failure among the students in this
program. The records show that
95% o f the athlete students in the
program have been graduated, and I
can recognize four o f them present
today who participated as students
in this program and who are now
married with families o f their own.
They now want to become host par
ents for other younger students en
tering the p ro gram ."
Recognition for 13 years o f serv
ice to the F A H program was accord
ed by Chatm an to Judge Belton
H am ilton and Mrs. H am ilton, to
Ocorge Rankin, and to Ernest and
Jeanne Hartzog, all charter mem
bers o f the select group o f support
families. Ten other couples were
awarded pins for their ten years of
service to the F A H program and six
families were given five-year pins.
Ken Berry, pianist, supplied din
ner music and the "J o y fu l Sounds,"
the a capella choir o f Margaret
Carter, sang their beautiful spirituals
and jubilee songs during the after
noon.
