T h e C onsum er Price Index fo r U rb a n W age Earners and C lerical
W o rk e rs ( C P I- W ) also rose 0 .5 percent in M a y . p rio r to seasonal adjust
m ent, to a level o f 296.3 (1967 « 100). F o r the 12-m onth period ended in
M a y , the C P I- W has increased 3.4 percent. T h e C P I- W is used fo r in d e x ­
ing Social Security and some other Federal paym ents. It is also com m o n-
ly used as an escalator in collective bargaining agreements.

Joseph Petro vich , the state H e a lth D ivision o ffic ia l overseeing the la w ,
said, " I understand w e've been deluged w ith c a lls" fro m businessmen
asking how they can co m p ly. T h e state has printed 10.000 pam phlets on
com pliance and w ill send out 7 ,0 0 0 next week to restaurants, said E ric
P ip p ert, an enviro n m e n ta l services consultant hired tem po rarily to field
com plaints. A perm anent adm inistrative assistant w ill be hired A u g. I

out the P o rtla n d m e tro p o lita n area. W h ile the m ain studio for the Port
land -V anco uver television station is in Van cou ver, U n io n A v e n u e la
