"June 25th may be an ordinary
day in most people's lives, but there
is nothing ordinary at all about the
25th day o f June. This is the day we
celebrate our G rand O pening,” said
Jamie, the new owner o f Jamie's
Place, located at 1315 NE Fremont
Ave.
Jamie was born in the state of
Oklahom a during the '40s Her par
ents moved to Portland in hope of
employment in the shipyards.
Jamie began
her career
in
mixology in 1965 after relocating to
Santa M onica, C alifornia. “ Every
one needs a chance,” said Jamie,
'and I got my chance in Santa
Monica where I worked from 1965
to 1971. This is where I really picked
up good bartending skills, and w ait
ress skills. Knowing how to greet the
customer is essential! You won't
survive in this business without
personality.
" I didn't have it easy. It was hard
work but hard w ork, patience and
determination paid o ff. I returned
to Portland in 1971 and began work
for The Three Fools — a large res
taurant chain. A t this time there
were no black bartcndei* in dow n
town Portland except for m yself."
Jamie's next position would last
for ten years with the Belair C lub —
now called Town Square. " I wasn't
job hopper. N o one wants a
person who will not slay on the job.
I saw four owners come and go; this
is a very stressful business. I f your
money doesn't go first your health
w ill, and I saw b o th ," said Jamie.
Born under the sign of Sagittarius,
Jamie loves a «.hallenge and her
strength to rise above is a quality
that is rare. She is full of life and be
lieves in living life to the fullest.
“ M y biggest fan is my husband
Tha lady you aaa abova la Jamla. Jamie la the
owner of Jamie's Place. 1313 N.E. Fremont.
Jamie'a Place Is a live place, Jamie's place is the
place of the '80a. Jamie'a place will be having its
Bill. We have been married for ten
years and he has never held me
b ack," Jamie explains. " W e all
need someone special in our corner
giving that extra push and Bill is my
special someone."
Jamie has a small staff o f dedicat
ed workers. You can find M r. Bill in
the kitchen offering a mean steak
and eggs for breakfast, your
favorite sandwich for lunch and a
not-limited-lo-chicken-only dinner.

lowed Jamie from M ilto n and
Oscar's. "G o o d help is hard to find.
I ought to kn o w ," says Jamie. “ I
have been in the business for over
fifteen years. M y last position as an
employee was at
M ilton
and
Oscar's.
" I have gained valuable experi
ence at each place of employment.
Success is not always measured by
wealth, nor is it won overnight. You
should start small and end up big,”
Jamie stated “ W e all have our own
preconceived notions o f how and
why we become successful. I really
do not like to use the expression
'successful.* I have only just begun.
I have so much more to learn 'and
experience. But I must admit, it is a
great feeling to be the employer and
not the em ployee."
W hat advice would Jamie give to
someone with the desire to start his
own business? " T o go slow. T o do
it yourself and never base your goals
on anyone but yourself. You have to
want this. No one can want it for
you."

Although the kids will run the
show, Ms. Porter has given them
guidance and direction which she
developed from the sheer experience
o f twenty years in the competitive
beauty business. She is no stranger
to fashion shows and the Broadway
Hairweevers sponsors at least six
shows a year Ms. Porter just com
pleted a hair show at G M S I (Oregon
Museum o f Science and Industry)
which dealt with rue color.
She constantly emphasizes that
the kids will run the whole show.
The kings and queens o f the com
munity even picked out the theme
and name of the show, Duke and
Duchess Fashion Show. The conven
tional notion o f a fashion show is
the displaying o f clothes, but the
Duke and Duchess will give the
public a view into (he fashions o f
their world. The children will model
fashions appropriate for everyone
from basketball players to ballet
dancers.
"T h is will be our chance to see
what our children want to wear, and
most importantly, what they want
to be. It will be a talent show
wrapped up in a fashion show. W e

Grassroots News. N. W. — \ cry
for recognition from a little girl
getting her hair done did not fall
upon deaf ears. The hair care pro
fessional that heard her plea was
H attie Porter, owner and operator
o f Broadway Hairweever and D e
signers.
"O n e day a little client came in
and said, 'W h y do you have fashion
shows for adults, and none for chil
dren?' She had a point. I told her to
wail a few days and we would have a
fashion show for h e r." This is how
the Duke and the Duchess Fashion
Show got started. What sets this
fashion show apart from the rest is
that it is controlled, produced and
directed by the stars o f today —
children between the ages o f three
and twelve.
"T h is is a sensational first to ever
hit P o rtlan d ," Ms. Porter begins.
" W e have kids running the whole
show. Many will never have the
chance to do this again. They will be
introduced
to
modeling,
good
grooming habits and how to spruce
up their appearance Many o f the
things they will learn from organiz

show will remain with them fo r
