books, periodicals, pamphlets and
newspapers, beginning in 1846.
The project has spurred the re­
production o f r u e and deteriorating
periodicals and books. A t little cost,
U .S. libraries are given the photo­
graphic masters o f documents after
they are used to make copies for the
British Library.
