Gladys Knight
& the Pips
The legend o f Gladys Knight and the Pips continues with their debut
release for Colum bia Records. A b o u l Love. Produced by Ashford and
Simpson, with all material written by that same hit-m aking team, A b o u l
Love, aptly demonstrates the quartet's continuing appeal to today's audi
ences, an appeal that is evidenced in sold-out concert tours. SRO engage
ments at lop international venues, a string o f awards and a following that
grows with each passing year. W ith A b o u t Love, Gladys Knight and the
Pips have taken a giant step into the ‘80s, bringing with them an acutely
honed musical sensibility and an unerring professionalism.
Gladys, who remembers singing her first notes at age four, became a pro
fessional at the tender age o f seven, after winning the $2,000 grand prize on
Ted M ack's Original Am ateur H our.
"O ur big number back then was 'Canadian Sunset,’ ” reminisces William.
It was W illiam 's mother, Mrs. Margaret Guest, along with Gladys' mom,
Elizabeth Knight and another cousin James 'P ip ' W ood, who decided that
the group's talent warranted a professional career. Using the W ood's nick
name 'Pip* as their moniker, Gladys Knight and the Pips were born.
"G rap evin e" was the beginning o f a string o f M otow n hits for Gladys
Knight and the Pips. They included "Neither One o f Us (Wants to Say
Goodbye)” "Friendship T ra in ” and " I D o n 't W ant T o D o W ro n g ."
" T h e M otow n period was when things really started blossoming for us,"
Ed explains. "W e started playing gigs and the feeling was real good."

After seven years at M otow n, the group signed to Buddah Records, and
suddenly witnessed a skyrocketing in their career that brought them inter
national recognition and superstar status. "Im a g in atio n " was their first
substantial winner on Buddah followed by the enormously popular
“ M idnight T ra in ” and the equally acclaimed " Y o u ’re The Best Thing That
Ever Happened To M e ." T o all intents and purposes, Gladys Knight, her
brother and cousins, had arrived, picking up, along the way, every imagin
able music award, including the prestigious Gram my and American Music
Awards.
Now , with A b o ul Love, Gladys Knight and the Pips continues a thirty
year tradition o f great sound. "W hen you have the kind o f stir and
excitement that we've gotten around this album you know you've got
something special," offers Gladys, obviously well-pleased with the group's
