(Photo: Richard Brown) Marchers seek liberation Grassroots News. N. W. — Satur day, M ay 28, marked the l lt h annual A frikan Liberation Day celebration. Many fell that the fact Afro-A m ericins in Portland were able to do something for 11 straight years deserves historical recogni tion. Brother kamau explains, "T his is a tremendous statement for the black community and all the support for the total liberation of Southern A fric a ." Nationwide, Afrikan Liberation is celebrated throughout the black communities. W hy should they con cern themselves with the political climate o f Africa when their politi cal situation is so demanding at home? kam au answers, "W e want to make Portland's black communi ty identify with the total African community throughout the world. That is the major reason for Afrikan Liberation Day. T o bring about a cohesiveness for the liberation of A frika. O ur major concerns is that we are descendants from A frika. Every ethnic group in this country has a culture and a land base to identify with. By celebrating Afrikan Liberation day, we are re claiming our land, we are reclaiming our culture." The catalyst o f support is cen tered around the suppression o f Southern Africans. "Across this country on M ay 28 people around the country are showing their solidarity for A frikan Liberation. The Brothers from the liberating forces in Southern A frik a have told us to organize, protest and demon strate. O ur presence is making that statement today. I'm sure our spirit will give them some type o f moral support, kam au concludes. I he hundreds of people assembled in Irving Park felt the spirit of to getherness on A frikan Liberation Day with their reactions to one question, "W h a t does A frikan L ib eration Day mean to you?” “ It means back to (he roots, back to the real thing and back to m e." The event started o ff with a march from king School to Irving Park. Performers included the Talking Drum Dancers, the N o rth west Afrikan American Dance Troup, speakers, crafts and various exhibits. The theme o f A frikan Liberation Day, I983, was one of the chants during the march, “ A frik a for Afrtkans! We are an A frikan people!" 25% Action separates ol stretch woven polyester lor comfortable movement and easy care Machine washable need no ironing when tumbled dry Slacks have Ban Rol waistband S65 Solid blazer 47 99 $24 Reversible vest 17.99 $26 Solid slacks 18 99 Not available at Pocatello Twin F alls Pinstripe sep arates 3 0 % o ff Have same at lion features as above in c lu d in g Ban R o l' s tre tc h w aist band to help prevent roll river $75 Pinstripe coal $27 Pinstripe vest $30 Pinstripe slacks Meals available The Providence Medical Center is now offering dinner at a reduced price to all senior citizens, seven days a week from 5:00 p.m . to 7:15 p.m. Norm al price for the regular meal ranges from $2.50 lo $3.25.
