Detroit et Tampa Bay Detroit, J-4, now is struggling a f ter getting o ff to an impressive start. Tam pa, behind Q B Doug W illiams, should prove too much for Lions at Silverdome. Sims appears to be only offensive threat in Detroit's arsenal. Passing game has suffered lately, putting the full load on Sims' broad shoulders. Strong la m p a defense should al low Buts to win by 414. New England at Pittsburgh Both learns have identical 4-3 rec ords. New England's quarterback ing is still a question m ark. B rad shaw hasn't regained early season touch. Steelers h aven ’ t showed much consistency on o ffen se. Should he noted that usually depen dable receivers are now dropping easy passes. How ever, after losing 10 9 to Cleveland last week. Steelers should rebound to beat Patriots. Steelers by 6. Naw York Olanta va. St. Louis Giants are 3-4 and still in the race for p la y o ff tournam ent, w hile 4-3 Cardinals now appear to be in tour ney. Cardinals downed the Bears 10- 7 in the snow and sleel o f Chicago's Soldier Field. St. Louis QB Neil Lo max was replaced by the veteran Jim H a rt in the fo u rth q u a rter. Again H a rt got (he jo b done leading the Birds on a late drive that produced a 48-yard field goal by Neil O ’ D ono hue. Giants must get more passing yardage to win. New York defense is sturdy, but cannot win putting less than 20 points on scoreboard. Take St. Louis by 2. San Francisco at Kansas City Both teams are going now here this season. San F rancisco, last year's Super Bowl champs, are 2-3, as are the Chiefs. Kansas City rush ing game appears strong. K C amassed 198 yards rushing on just 33 tries in their 37-16 win over D en ver last week. Denver’s Steve DeBerg was held to just 146 yards in the air. S F .'s re lia b le secondary have bs«n sternly tested because o f a sorry pass rush. Young 49er secon dary is still the best, but team needs to put more pressure on opposing Q B to be effective. A similar situ ation happened against L .A ., the Blazers were losing by seven but pulled out a 107-103 victory. In m a n looks at the team w ith more o f a long-term plan. " I t could be a very special team in a year or s o ," he said. R ig ht now he is pleased w ith the w ork ethic o f the team and the ch aracter being shown. " I think we may be very competi tive with most o f these teams by the end o f the year," Inman said. W hat he is doing is not promising the playoffs or anything else actual ly. W hat the Blazers are doing is re gaining the confidence that seemed to vanish at the season's start. One player w ho was pressured a great deal at the year's beginning was Darnell Valentine but he has settled down to add not only strong defense but some offensive punch at times. In m a n , about V a le n tin e , said, " I think he's playing awfully w ell." V ale n tin e was one o f three B la zers that Inman gave high marks on a standard grading scale.
