p re -a p p re n tice tra in in g to prepare
fo r the a p p re n tic e s h ip e x a m in a ­
tions. He was interested in carpentry
b u t fo u n d h im s e lf 42 on a lis t o f
80.
L ow ery heard th a t there were no
m in o r ity tile setters and th a t the
trade was seeking m in o ritie s , so he
to o k the e x a m in a tio n . O f the class
o f 14 w h o were accepted o n ly tw o
men re m a in in the tra d e . L o w e ry
to o k fo u r years c o m p le tin g the
th re e -ye a r a p p re n tic e s h ip course
consisting o f classes and o n -th e -jo b
tr a in in g , le a rn in g a ll facets o f the
fie ld — flo ors, tubs, countertops, pa­
tio s , etc. H is w o rk in c lu d e d the
V ancouver M a ll, C lackam as T o w n
C e n te r, N o r d s tro m ’ s d o w n to w n ,
and w ork in Seattle and Anchorage.
L o w e ry has been a jo u rn e y m a n
fo r over a year but did not fin d jobs
fo rth c o m in g . “ T he u n io n w anted
m inorities in the trade, but now they
d o n ’ t call me. E ith e r they pick up a
new apprentice they can get fo r less
m on ey, o r i f th e y have to ta ke a
jo u rn e y m a n they can get someone
w ith m ore experience w ho has been
in the trade fo r 20 o r 30 years.” As
fa r as he know s, he is the o nly black
journeym an tile setter in Oregon.

licensed fo r M u ltn o m a h , W a sh in g ­

bonded. He is q u a lifie d to do home

L o w e ry was raised in P o rtla n d ,
a tte n d in g J e ffe rs o n H ig h S c h o o l,
P o rtla n d C o m m u n ity C ollege and
the U n iv e rs ity o f O re g o n . H e and
his w ife , Joyce, have tw o sons, A n ­
th o n y and Jason. M rs . L o w e ry is
em ployed as a receptionist by O p er­
a tin g Engineers L oca l 701. L ow ery
