The Gingerbread Lady
The Gingerbread Lady, by Neil Simon, opens Portland Civic Theatre’s
Blue Room season and runs Thursdays through Saturdays through Novem
ber 20th.
First presented in New York in 1970, The Gingerbread Lady is essentially
a drama rather than a comedy, but it is humorous to the extent that there is
a great deal o f funny dialogue stemming very naturally from characters who
live in a world where wisecracks serve to mask almost constant cries for
help.
In The Gingerbread Lady, Neil Simon has created characters through
whom he deals with alcoholism, parent-child relationships, friendship based
on mutual weakness and need, and the waste o f life itself. In certain respects
this play has a Chekhovian quality in that its people are funny at one level,
deeply tragic at another. The protagonist, Evy Meara, a burnt-out, alcohol
ic lounge singer, returns from a spell in a sanitarium where she has gone for
treatment for alcoholism, to her rather squalid New York apartment. Evy
attempts to put her life together with the help o f her daughter Polly and a
few friends. The Gingerbread Lady was made into a film last year entitled
Only When I Laugh, and earned three Academy Award nominations.
Under the direction o f Robert Nielsen, the six member cast includes Betty
Brookes as Evy M eara, A dair Chappell as her daughter Polly, Nicholettc
Reid as Toby Landau, Evy’s best friend, and Thom C o sg riff as Jimmy
Perry, the homosexual out-of-work actor.
Agatha C hristie’s The M ousetrap, directed by Jacqueline W illis is cur
rently playing on P .C .T .’s Mainstage through October 30th. Call 226-3048
