A U C A , H O N D U R A S — From
this village near the Atlantic Coast it
is possible to keep close watch on
the M iskito Indian insurgency—the
brush fire which threatens to spread
the conflagration o f civil war in the
region. Fighting is already fierce in
El Salvador and Guatemala; the
Nicaraguan M is k ito rebellion
threatens to destabilize the Sandin-
ista government in Nicaragua, and
from this outpost, there is evidence
that Honduras is now involved and
that the U.S. is fanning the flames.
A long the border near here are
ten clandestine insurgent bases. The
refugee camp o f Tapamlaya, cur
rent home o f 1300 M iskito s, is a
five-hour walk north.

Even the Honduran M iskito o r
ganization, “ Masta,” could cause
Misura future problems. The seven-
year-old group's new directorate,
elected in August, is worried that
Faggoth and his commanders w ill
try to recruit Honduran M iskitos
and eventually embroil the area in a
full scale war.
“ The M iskitos from Nicaragua
only talk about killing Sandinistas,”
explained one o f the Masta's new di
rectorate members. “ We are a
peaceful people and th in k d iffe r
ently. A ll we want is that they re
spect Honduran laws.”
The Honduran M is k ito leader
said Masta hoped to begin a d ia
logue with the Nicaraguan M iskito
organization, and fears intimidation
from them unless an agreement is
reached.
