SHOCK
Shock is a talented young Portland,
Oregon, band specializing in street
wise funk
T h is sum m er, they h it fir s t tim e
o u t w ith the sin g le “ L e t’ s G et
C r a c k in ’ , ” an im p u d e n t, h ig h ly
infectious funk anthem which c h a rt
ed top five in several m a jo r m arkets
(C h ic a g o , A tla n ta . St. L o u is , the
Carolina*) and was a top 40 contend
er nationwide.
Shock’s self-titled album debut on
Fantasy contains some high-stepping,
m ettlesom e s tu ff — the new single
“ L et Y o u r Body D o the T a lk in ’ , ”
th e ir them e song “ S h o c k " — but
the band proves it can do more than
ju s t “ c r a c k .” “ Each and E v e ry
D ay” is an exceptional ballad.
The album was recorded in P o rt
land and produced by former Pleasure
g u ita ris t M a rlo n M c C la in and 22-
year-old Roger Sause, Shock’ s key
board player and chief w riter.
Shock was fo rm e d a b o u t th re e
years ago by Sause, p e rcu ssio n ist
B illy Bradford, bassist Joe Plass, and
sa xop ho nist Steve Snyder. “ F ro m
the s ta rt, we b u ilt the band around
o u r r e c o r d in g ,” R oger e x p la in s .
“ There a re n ’ t th a t m any places to
w o rk in P o rtla n d i f y o u ’ re p la ying
r& b , so we’ d ju s t go in to the studio
and e x p e rim e n t. T h a t’ s how we
came up w ith these tunes.”
In 1979, Shock released a single on
the local Nebula label; it was a region
al h it. A m ong those who took notice
o f the g ro up was M a rlo n M c C la in ,
w h o ’ d met Roger b rie fly at a P o rt
lan d s tu d io a few years b e fo re .
M a rlo n got back in touch and was
soon w orking w ith Shock.
Shock has since evolved into a ten-
piece band. The individual members
have been a c tiv e in the P o rtla n d
music scene since their teens or even,
in some cases, since childhood.
