World marks fail to fall at Oregon Invitational
Mac Wllklna. gold medalist In 1978 Olympics, was second In discus
behind John Powell. Powell's best was 211-7.
Jeff Phillips, winner of the 100 and 200 meters.
The crowd was reedy; the weather
wa* rig h t; but the records d id n ’ t
crumble under the onslaught of some
o f the world’s top contenders who
participated in the Oregon Invitation
al Track and Field meet Saturday in
Eugene.
A n unsung hero o f the Invitation
al was Maricica Puica o f Romania
who broke M a ry Decker T a b b ’s
world record in the mile last week
w ith a tim e o f 4 :1 7 .4 4 and hit a
personal best o f 1:37.8 in the 800.
She left the field far behind in a race
to the goal in 2:01.83.
The 800 meter (m en ’ s) field in
cluded the U .S .’ s top rated James
R obertson, who ranks 3th in the
world with 1:44.64; Sammy Koskei
of Kenya, ranked 7th at 1:44.93; and
N C A A cham pion D avid M ac k,
with a high mark o f 1:43.33. The race
finished slow with Koskei taking first
at 1:47.94, followed by Joel Ngetich
o f Kenya at 1 :4 7.9 4 and Torstein
Brox o f the U .S. at 1:49.02.
The mile started with a bang when
C h a rlie T a le a fe rro , Spain’s Jose
A bscal, West G e rm a n y ’s Thomas
Wesinghage, and Tom Byers landed
on the trac k. A restart was sche
duled ten minutes later.
Abascal, running with a deep spike
hole in his heel, pulled ahead to lead
the pack in the th ird lap. T o m
Byers, who nursed a badly scraped
and bruised knee, turned on his
speed passing the three runners in
front o f him. He crossed the line in
3:33.18, a new Hayward Field rec
ord, but failed to break Jim Ryun’s
U.S. record.
Graham Williamson of Scotland,
3:33.42; Abascal, 3:53.64; Thomas
Wesinghage, W . Germany, 3:45.03;
and Roy Flynn, Ireland, 3:54.38.
Jeff Phillips o f the U.S. won the
100 and 200 yard dash. The tall blond.
who looks m ore lik e a basketball
player than a sprinter, out-sprinted
Mel Lattany o f the U .S . and Chris
Braithwaite and Halsey Crawford of
Trinidad and Tabago to take the 100
in 10.29. C ra w fo rd is an O lym pic
gold medalist.
P h illip s ’ spurt o f speed le ft his
competitors in the dust in the 200
meters, with a time of 21.04. Howard
H in le y clocked in at 21.43 and
Clancy at 21.64.
Bob Roggy failed in his effo rt to
break the w orld record in ja ve lin .
Although he has made 6 throws over
300 feet in competition this season
and felt “ re ad y ” fo r the Eugene
meet, his best throw was 276-10.
Dave Lout also failed in his effort
to set a new record. L o u t’ s 72-3
earlier this year matched the U .S .
record. Also competing was Dean
Crouser o f Oregon, who beat Lout
by 1 Vi inches earlier this year and
won the N C A A title. Lout finished
first with 276-10.
Anna Verouli o f Greece set a new
Hayward Field record in the javelin
with a throw o f 218-5.
B illy M cC h esn ey’s 5 ,000 meter
brought excitement to the otherwise
lack-lu ster meet. K en ya’ s Peter
Koech (ranked 3rd in the world) and
England’s Julian Goater fought for
firs t po sitio n fo r the first 3,00 0
meters. Then Billy shot out from be
hind to take a substantial lead,
breaking the tape at 13:31.98 in his
e ffo rt to break A lb e rto S a la za r’s
U .S. record o f 3:11.93. McChesney
said he took advantage o f the two
leaders as a wind break during the
earlier laps, but his main reason for
holding back was that “ I just didn’t
feel g o o d .” H e added, “ I ’ ve been
working on my luck and apparently
it paid o f f . ” Kuech finished at
13:34.65 and Goater at 13:36.41.
